| its now being made illegal for hotels in the UK to descriminate against gay couples. I was wondering if any gay people think hotels should be allowed to continue to descriminate against gays. |

| businesses have the right to refuse service to anyone they see as clientelle they do not wish to associate with. Can I not refuse to serve someone that has no shoes, no shirt? That's targeting homeless, right? If I don't want a gay clientelle (sp?) and it's my business, then who is anyone to say I have to serve anyone I don't want to serve. |

What do you mean by discrimination? What are hotels doing to discriminate?
(But, in general, I agree that regulations to keep businesses from serving only the clientelle they wish is ridiculous. If I open a restraunt and I only want to serve Asian women, that should be my decision. The market will decide if my decision is appropriate and the public will act accordingly. If the public dislikes my decision, I will lose customers and go out of business.) |

| Telling a man, who owns a property, what rules to set for it is socialism, pure and simple. This also means that the community, NOT THEY, own the property. |

Actually, that's because of health codes. |

I think there will always be discrimination of some sort, regardless of the person's sexuality.
I wonder how the hotel knows a couple is gay? Granted, sometimes you might be able to 'tell', but not everytime. Besides, having (for example) 2 hotels in town that don't allow gays just makes the other hotels that accept gays make more $. Some hotels even cater to gays in certain cities (San Fran, Key West, Pittsburg [< -I have heard]). Like posted previously, the market will dictate if this was a wise decision on the part of the hotel owner/operators. |

ok, what if my resturant says you have to wear a dress jacket, wouldn't that be catering to the wealthy and discriminating against the poor?
Hell, if I want to cater to whites only, it's my choice. |

And it should be your choice. The market and public will decide if that choice is worthy of their business, thus determining your success or failure. The only place that people should be guarenteed equality is in the eyes of the law, not necissarily in the eyes of one another. |

This is the people's nation and that is the people's property.
The hotel is in the community, the hotel must follow the community's laws. |

While I agree with you, I find this notion a bit problematic and simplistic since discrimination often occurs against minorities who are few in numbers and have little power to influence anyone. |

That assumption is usually correct though. In many instances, the majority doesn't care or the issue is not a priority for them. Your assumption is that a society is a tolerant and a virtuous one, which is not often true as the minorities find themselves isolated more often than not. |

I doubt that the majority would allow for grossly discriminatory practices to continue. Either way, the government should have no right to tell me who I have to serve as a business owner. |
