I put this here because of the technique I teach...

I coach wrestling, hence my screenname... I coach that wrestling is also a mental game as well as physical. To truely master wrestling, you must master both.

During weighins, some wrestlers begin getting into their zone in preperation. Some are masters at it, some are not. Some get quiet and withdraw from anything in order to focus, some start pacing, and in the extreme, so try to act "crazy" in order to psych out their opponent who is also weighing in.

I told them instead of using all those techniques that are old and busted, act gay.

Get the lisp down, start eying your opponent, make comments like "mmm, I sure hope you are wrestling in my weight class" ect.

You don't know the guys, so it's not like it will come back to bite you in the ass reputation wise. Your team mates will already know what you're doing, and you are meanwhile, getting this guy worried about something. And while he's thinking about that during a match, he's not thinking about wrestling, or at the very least, you have divided his attention. You can also talk during the match so you can grunt and groan certain ways as you wrestle only loud enough for the other wrestler to hear.

Is this wrong? Or is it just teaching a mental edge technique important in the sport.

Wrong or not, you are correct that it does freak people out.

(But, to be honest, it is tactics like that which have made me lose any and all respect for most athletes).

that, and if you are stereotypical, you aren't athletic so you lash back by judging them or else you wouldn't have 'lost respect'

This is just a tactic to try and get into someone elses head and play head games with. So cuss at you and try to talk smack, I think this is another tool in that battle.

It's the unusual tactics that work the best.

example-

In highschool, I sacked Danny Wuerfall, a QB who went on to play at U. of Florida, win the Heisman, national title and on to the NFL. His team in highschool, won the state title that year we played them. Anyways, him and his reciever, (another future NFL player) hooked up on the first play of the game with a 80 yrd TD as I was coming in for the sack. His release didn't stop me from sitting him down on his backside very hard. I got up, hooting and hollering, talking schmack and do you know his reply was to me? "God Bless you" Mind you, this guy is a son of a preacher, ordained himself and just took a huge shot from a trash talking linebacker and he said "God Bless you" I tell you, it was so different, it threw me off my game for the rest of the night.

So my technique of acting gay during wrestling is just that different sort of way to get someone out of their game, an into my wrestlers game

I never denied that the tactic worked. I just said that I have lost respect for athletes who feel the need to resort to tactics like "acting gay" in order to gain a competetive edge.

Oh, and although I no longer do so, I used to play football. I know what it is like to be an athlete, and I know the advantage that mental games can bring. So, don't accuse me of lashing out at something I don't understand. I didn't respect that tactic (acting gay) when I played, and I see no reason to respect it now.

because you weren't acting.

of course, if one of my wrestlers wrestles someone like you, the tactic could backfire.

Haha, well to tell the truth I'm pretty sure that any gay man would be just as freaked out as a straight one if the guy he's competing against in a sport appeared to be coming onto him in the middle of the match. I mean, that's just weird.

As for the morality of the situation, well I don't think I agree with attempting to win by deception instead of by skill at the sport. Beyond that, I don't think it is moral to perpetuate the myth that gay people are constantly obsessed with sex.

For just the sports aspect of your statement, in all sports the mental aspect and getting under your opponents skin is an accepted part of the game. It even happens in golf more than most people would realize. It happens in all sports and is as much a part of the game as anything.

I'm playing up the homophobia that exists in the world. And it doesn't matter if you can't wrestle in the first place as you have to have both skill and mental games to be successful. But, when you're winning by 1 point, late in the match, do you want your opponent thinking about a possible match winning move to put on you, or thinking about how he hopes to God that he is only feeling your athletic supporter, not anything else.

Isn't is bad enough that the guys get boners from wrestling anyway?!? I would think the fear of trying to hide a boner in of itself would put you off your game!
:lol:
In all seriousness, it does perpetuate the 'negative sterotype of...' blah blah blah (you know how it goes).
I would hope the guys are smart enough to know it is a trick & such so if that's the case, while it might not be a 'best pratice' in this PC world, if it works it works!

yeah, usually the guys who pop a semi-wood are weeded out pretty quick. Wrestlers don't want gay people rubbing all over them. Just like I don't want to wrestle a chick because I might get aroused, a gay guy on my back poses the same threat. Besides, if they insist on doing a sport, they should stick to cheerleading

And people incapable of looking past a person's sexual orientation should stick to Klan memberships.

Maybe some wrestler has an artificial knee, and I don't want that to rub up against me when we're wrestling. Should I kick him out of the league? No, that's horribly unfair. If I want to wrestle, I can just refuse to wrestle that person or deal with it.

What I mean is: my individual preference should not be used to deny someone else's freedom. I may dislike wrestling with certain people, but my dislike of them is my problem: I'm wrong if I try to stop those people from wrestling.

Weren't you the one saying that mentally throwing your opponent off his game is a good strategy?

So, acting gay is okay, but getting an erection and breaking the other wrestler's concentration is not?

Seems to me that if you are advocating ways to affect your opponent, you would want wrestlers that get erections...they could win a lot of matches.

I 'm saying I know how bad it would have affected me. We ran one off the team for popping wood, (not on me thankkfully) So if that got everyone worked up, imagine if someone was flaming. Now, then, no harm in acting right?

I love the double standard you present here. Acting gay is fine, as it helps to throw opponents off their game. Being gay is not, because gay guys would all get erections during wrestling matches, and that isn't a good way to throw opponents off their game.

Acting = good
Being = bad
