I think there should be a Common Topics forum for topics that have been rehashed over and over and over again. These topics would include Social Security, Gay Marriage, Drug Prohibition, etc. I think this would be useful so that newbies to the forums don't create topics that have already been discussed over and over again.

C'mon, not one person thought it was a good idea? Maybe I should included a poll. People seem to like polls.

It's a good idea in many respects but when common topics get stickied people often want to start a fresh thread so they don't have to read one with 40 pages or go to a quieter forum. Just human nature I think. Half the threads in P&G could be easily moved to other forums but people who post there do so because they want the instant feedback. Hence 15 threads on Iran or Bush. I tried to keep the Middle east stuff in the M.E. forum once but some of the same people who would talk about thread repitition kept posting in P&G anyway without going to see acres of existing stuff on the same topics in the other forum.
I think there will always be a large element of subject re-hashing when a forum is turning over as fast as P&G. It can be an unwieldy beast.

I would say that more threads and more repeats are not a bad thing.

I agree. When topics get to long sometimes people just stray away from the same old debate over and over again.

Yet when it is brought up in a fresh new perspective, often times people might debate it differently.

I think it would be unwieldly for the admins & mods trying to keep track of stray posts.

I also don't think it will cut down on the repetition. A lot of it is just rehash after rehash, but now and then someone will come at a topic from a different direction or want to discuss a very specific aspect. I think we just have to accept that this is part of the game and plan accordingly.
