redneck is alot like the "N word".... when a non-redneck uses the term.. its an insult... when a redneck calls a redneck a redneck... its a "homeboy" type of thing...
the term has a few different roots.. but as for the american roots.. it comes from the southern people.. and their sunburned necks due to working outdoors.
ive heard it has roots in scotland .. or ireland... but i cant remember the exact story there.
and yes.. i do think its a racial slur..
"white trash" is obviously a racial slur.... although ive seen "trailer trash" used without any racial connotations.
seems to me that instead of working hard to find racial terms that are "OK".. time would be better spend by addressing issues other than disparging terms due to skin pigmentation... with that being said... im off to find new and improved terms to offend ultraliberals :wink: :lol: |

actually.. i think the roots over there came from something other than race or sunburns... im a lil foggy on the deal.. but i believe it had something to do with signing religious petitions, using their own blood for ink,.. and then draping a red scarf around their necks to identify themselves..... i jsut cant recall what the petitions were about and what churches were involved.
its very similiar to how Marines got the term "Leatherneck"....as in it came from a tangible item worn around their neck. |

The term "Redneck" originates in Colonial America. In the Southern Colonies, there were essentially two regions: The Backcountry and Tidewater. The Tidewater was the coastal area, with rich farmland allowing for the slave aristocracy to thrive. The Backountry had fewer slaves, because the terrain was rougher and not suited towards the big plantations. "Redneck" was a derogatory term for the poor white farmers in the Backcountry who spent their days farming, the sun beating down on the back of their necks, giving it the characteristic red of sunburn. Hence, Redneck. |
