I made Ozzone an op (the chat-equivalent of a moderator) because he knows a lot about that IRC crap....so he's the boss pretty much in there.

Guys, I just wanted to jump in here with some thoughts. Yes, Gus made me an OP simply because I know a lot about IRC and he decided to leave it up to me to fix up the chat and make it more secure.

Hey guys, being an op on an irc channel isn't like being a mod on this forum. The real main purpose of an op is security of the channel. I have no intention of controlling what is said, nor should I. Basically I want to make sure that - 1) the channel is reserved and locked to prevent someone else from taking over, 2) no one can hijack it (which is common on IRC if you know IRC) and 3) users that don't belong there are kicked to prevent spamming and abuse that will keep legitimate PCF users from wanting to be on there. However, if I am on and someone is abusing the chat, I will kick them off and report them immediately to Gus or another mod. Remember, the chat is independent of the forum but is basically an extension of the forum. The rules are much different because you aren't "posting" you are chatting real time with members.

As far as I am concerned, Gus is responsible for the channel and PCF owns it since the channel is designed to be used by PCF members. I would not like to go so far as to create an access list (which would effectively block anyone accessing it without using the PCF nickname only) unless if becomes absolutely necessary.

I have reserved the channel and my nick (Ozzone). That way no one else can create that channel (should no one ever be logged on and the channel name is free for someone else to take.

As far as security goes, one possibility is creating a password to access the channel but there are two obvious problems with that. 1) the Java applet would have to be modified inside PCF and 2) people could easily give it out to anyone they want which would negate the security. I decided that is not a good route to go.

You have the option of registering your nickname, but you would have to use a 3rd party IRC client to do so. There are many out there and you can google "IRC client". I use mIRC.

I prefer using an IRC client instead of the Java, but IRC is not really for novices. If you cannot use the built-in chat, your only option is using an IRC client like mIRC.

Guys, don't even ask me to be an OP on the channel. If you want to be an OP, then send a PM to Gus (on here) and request it. I'm not managing that aspect of it and prefer not to. My job is just to make sure the channel stays secure is all. Since Gus is a mod on here and he set up the chat channel, that is something he will control. So don't even waste your time asking me because I'm simply going to tell you - NO.

One other thing, please refrain from using unknown nicks on the channel. This creates confusion to the others on there as to who you are. Remember, this is a chat channel and not the forum, you can say pretty much anything you want, but there's no way to validate who you are. But don't think you can fake it out. If I see abuse, I will report that nick. If anyone is caught using someone else's nick falsely, that will be reported to the admins. I'm sure they won't be happy seeing someone using someone else's nick and stirring up crap to get that person in trouble.

If someone is caught using someone else's nick, that information can be sent to Blitzed.com and they can permanently block that user from even getting on the server. I don't think that's something you want to happen if you intend to create mischief on the chat.

Keep the chat clean. Say whatever you want. It's a chat, not the forum, but if someone deliberately tries to disrupt it in order to create a hostile atmosphere for everyone, they will get banned from using it. Treat others like you want to be treated (well kinda).

If you have any questions about how to use it, feel free to go into the chat and ask. If no one replies it's probably because everyone is AFK. I will be AFK a lot, even though it looks like I'm there.
