Do you still have my warning form like, 10 years ago on there? Because that would be creepy

No, this forum is not that old.
Do you still have the only warning I have gotten on log? :)

I wasn't speaking about this board with regard to ideological bannings (I was talking about Democratic Underground and Free Republic). And, from obsevering those boards, they do indeed ban people for not meeting their right/left wing perspective. I was saying that banning on those kinds of premises are of course wrong however banning/warnings have to be made on the content of posts. For instance, one thing that I find annoying is when I bring up the hackery of "Bu$h=Hitler" and "liberals <3 Saddam" type posts I often here the typical, incorrect, "that is what debate is" posts from many of the same people who make those kinds of posts. No, that is not what debate is, that is spam/flaming and it needs to be taken care of. People these days (likely from the cable news channels) seem to confuse partisan bickering and namecalling with debate and then try and justify their flaming by using the "debate" card. Real debates are based on arguing matters of fact, not on seeing who can make the most long winded rhetoric or "scream" the loudest.

Some people definitely do cross the line. It's not necessarily even a matter of them being 'mean', so much as it is about not following some of the basic rules that help keep the forum from becoming little more than one big flame fest.

I'd like to see less of the "liberals are insane", "Republicans are fascists" sort of threads. Sometimes people may actually have a good point, but it gets totally lost and ignored because instead of emphasizing that point for calm debate, they chose to use it as 'support' for outright bashing of their opponents.

Then there are the propagandists. There's one poster (who shall remain nameless) whose posts I've stopped reading and whom I've placed permanently on 'ignore' because the posts are clearly little more than pro-administration, liberal bashing propaganda. In fact, I suspect that poster may be a government plant. (And no, I'm not saying that only one side engages in this kind of crap - it's just especially noticeable with this one specific poster).

Then there are the truly mean people - those who can't make a point without being insulting and instead of engaging in actual debate are prone to one or two sentence posts whose clear intent is to troll either the thread topic or the poster.

I have no problem with reporting such people to the mods and admins. It's not because I have a thin skin - it's because these kinds of actions make genuine debate and discussion of important issues close to impossible.

Moved to Crossfire Q&A for now.

Oh, as for why people have been banned -- we have discussed it enough with those people that needed to know and we will not discuss the issue further, other than to say that those who have been banned have broke the rules.

Broken, Rob. They've broken the rules.

Notonly were you quoting me, but I do believe "broke" does work in this sentance, as does "broken."

I was making fun of you...for when Rob used "soars" instead "sores" in the mod forum...

Broke doesn't work. I don't know why...it just doesn't.

Prae! You broke the unwritten rules. What happens in the mod forum STAYS in the mod forum.

If I was a moderator, you would all fear me for being a little trigger-happy with the suspension button.

Which is precisely why I have never been chosen for the position. :shifty:

No.

"Broke is past tense"

Say it to yourself Galt. Broke does not flow in that sentence correctly. Besides, Prae and I have already decided that it is incorrect grammar. Your opinion has been vetoed and you are wrong.

Saying it to yourself can be misleading. For example, "I graduated from St. John's" is incorrect, and "I was graduated from St. John's" is correct. I am not convinced that it was an incorrect use of "broke."
Yeah, I'm not the greatest linguist. I have the most trouble with comma usage. The only pet peeve I have is the inappropriate usage of the word 'your'.

On the subject of banning, I'm gonna miss Sailor Moon. I don't pretend to not know the reason.

A thicker skin is not needed. What is needed is the ability to understand the basic concept that there are rules here that are to be followed. The banned list is full of those who failed to grasp that.

In all seriousness though, we take trolling very seriously here. Especially since it's gone out of hand in P&G. Lots of people are feeling the smackdown because their histories are coming back to bite them in the ass. Even if you don't see it, they often go way, WAY back when it comes to trouble.

Yup. And even though they may piss us off, we still try to respect their privacy and avoid humiliating them on their way out the door.

There might be some people who need tougher skin, but don't discount the fact that this is a political forum. While politics has changed, we don't need to change with it. Political debate in general has gone downhill over the past few years (maybe decade).

And in the end, we've got to go with what will continue to build the site. When people start leaving because they don't want to deal with getting trolled, that takes away advertising money, etc.

I don't know if this has been addressed by Gus already, but it's a problem we have sometimes. People check the box that says they do not want to receive emails from the site and then we can't send out the emails in regards to suspensions.
