God i cant wait til all the old people die and we can be properly metric. Pounds and Ounces make no sense to me. I measure my height in feet but six one sounds better than one metre whatever.
Stupid UKIP. Britain can't survive without europe, thats the future. I hope they all get caught in brothel raids! ^^ |

I agree, I have no idea how far a mile is, I think it terms of metres and km.
Problem is it costs to much to change the road signs to KM and old people don't stop moaning that they don't like change.
In about 10 years though everything will change, the only places imperial measurements are used is on markets and the ten years they'll all be gone. |

I disagree. I work with miles, ounces and pounds and wish to see those measurements preserved for many decades to come. If you all are so fussy, just learn to convert from the measurements you prefer to use which is not difficult to do and, positively, save the country some money. May traditionalism live....
Yes, I'm like an old man. |

| Our currency was converted to the metric system 30-odd years ago (before we joined the Common Market) as the first stage of a process, it was inevitable then that other measures would follow. Britain then joined the EU and it became a 'political issue' so everyone has dragged their feet on it. I agree that we should just stop messing around and transfer completely - ignore the whines of all the wannabe nationalists (true nationalists know their nation's history). |

| I still use miles and feet but use kilograms and meters as well. To be honest I don't see any problem with anyone using either measurements. |

| I'm just amazed anyone would care enough about this to formulate a position. Its simply not worth it to change. |

| The metric system is the most compatible system I have ever seen. I hate the use of pounds and ounces myself, especially since I'm a physics student. |

| Hey - what about the pint? Nothing is more likely to inspire the British into urban guerrila warfare against the government than being unable to intoxicate themselves in imperial |

Good point. Though litre > pints, i'm sure as a nation of binge drinking alcoholics, that when the majority of people start realising this they will, rather unsteadily and bleary eyed, greet the metric system with arms wide open. |

Ah but no, since beer will likely be served in 500ml glasses instead of pint glasses - and 500ml is actually slightly smaller than a pint. So we'll be drinking from smaller glasses. Horrific.
Also relating to changing to imperial measurements, I thought I'd quote what are probably some of my favourite lines in the whole of the english langauge, by Robert Frost:
"But I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep"
Change that to kilometres Neil Kinnock, you wanker  |

That was a pretty good poem.

....also, being an American, I have no idea what a wanker is. Could someone tell me? :!oops: |

Why is it that when a non-english movie is subtitiled to english, they convert kilos and kms to pounds and onzes???
I am not english (or american), but I can watch a Russian movie if subtitled.
But then the english translation is "he weighs 150 pounds"????
Why?
The guy said kilos, and I havn't got a clue what 150 pounds is. |

Reason why mixing imperial and metric is a fu** up:-
1999 Mars Climate Orbiter Space Probe.
Because of confusion between metric and imperial system (yes, the American team were calculating in imperial).
$125 million orbiter burnt up in Mars atmosphere. |
