hey guys, just wanted to get your opinions on how Muslim women should dress, I'm pretty much ignorant on what the Koran says on the subject, although many Muslims seem to have strong opinions, but quite diverse:

anyways love to hear your opinions :-D |

Ok. The top picture is an overexaggeration and is not a must.
The second picture is in Saudi Arabia. Many women dress like this, but many prefer to reveal their faces and hands. Other than that, nada.
The one on the bottom... hey, isn't that Benazhir Bhutto? It sure is. She's not wearing her veil properly, though: some of her hair is showing. |

Time to kill two birds with one stone.
Well, the standards are that the veil should cover the entire scalp and not reveal any hair whatsoever. Muslim women also should cover themselves from head to toe (not necessarily with abayas, as in the second picture, but with any dress whatsoever that is not preferably pants). The reason for this is for the woman to remain chaste and prevent onlookers and eyegazers when she goes in public marketplaces (i.e. prevent "lustful" tendencies in men to arise). It's more like protection than anything else, and is better than having a woman go out half-naked with a skirt. Let's say you have two twin teenage girls. Both are beautiful. They walk together. One of them is wearing a veil and a dress, the other a sleeveless, strapless top and a mini skirt. Which of those two is likely more to get harrassed by a boy?
Obviously, the mini-skirt cutie. You can take it from there... |

| So is it by their own free will and accord that they dress in said attire? |

Yes and no. Yes, in that many prefer to cover themselves when going out in public amongst men, and no in that it's a religious preference that they do so. In fact, even though they're not forced to wear it, they somewhat should. |

How do you know who you are attracted to? I've always wondered that.
When do you finally get to see them? On the wedding night? |

Good question, skipper.
Well, men are free to look around and choose. It's not that you don't see their faces; on the contrary, a veiled woman who gets engaged can take off her veil in the company of her new fiancé. In fact, women don't necessarily cover their faces in public, but mainly their hair and the rest of their body.
In short, you see them from the very beginning. |

So seeing their face is OK? I would imagine the rules are relaxed if the parents really like the man and everything is going well. Is this so? |

Of course! No doubt about that.

Oh yes. That too. Thanks for reminding me. Once the parents of the woman realize what an amazing man she has, the rules will lax... of course, not to the extent that they can make love with each other. |
