It means exactly that.
If we had complete freedom to say exactly what we wanted, the world would be in chaos! We don't walk around saying out loud "oh she's really fat", "he's really ugly" or "I hate <insert colour> people". Why don't we? Because it's neither nice nor acceptable to walk around insulting people...
So Moath is quite correct; Freedom of speech does not mean freedom from responsibility.
Yes, but would you want to see calling people fat a criminal offence?
Clearly not and if you read Moaths post, you'll see he (like many many Muslims) are not calling for laws to prevent people's free speech. Simply calling for people to use free speech in a responsible and socially accepted manner.
My take on this cartoon thing is that if the original Danish newspaper felt the need to print, so be it. But the other papers were just making a point and newspapers are for REPORTING NEWS, not making political statements. |

The day when the same mainstream politicans and journalists who condemn anyone for saying people who display signs saying "You'll see the real Holocaust soon" and "Freedom go to hell" should be arrested also condemn newspapers that dares republish the cartoons for not showing proper "respect for Islam".
Freedom of speech gose both ways, the printing of the cartoon was an **** thing to do, but justifed. The writing of these pissed off signs whilse also insensitive and **** is also justifed.
When people start damaging private property and hurting or even killing people, thats when theve crossed the line, and they should expect justice to be both fast and firm. Before that they are within there rights, thats what this entire debate is about.
The double standards exibited by so many people (not nessiarly you) are making this entire problem easily the biggest f**k up of the 21st centuary so far.
If only libertarians where in charge
Incitement to murder is a crime in the UK. Obviously, you don't agree with this, but there you go. |

Sorry for the repetative posts but I simply cannot believe that these people were not arrested and immediately deported to the hell hole they came from.
I agree. I and my friends cant believe it was allowed to go on. They didnt need to shoot them or use tear gas but they should have been arrested or atleast stopped! |

I'd like to draw a quick parallel here.
A few months back, the BNP(idiots, but still, its a point worth making) held a rally protesting over a murder, not some cartoons or anything so meaningless. They did not incite racial hatred, or insult anyone. 7 people got arrested, they claim a number (2,3), also got fairly brutally assaulted by the police (not substantiated though lol!).
Then, Muslims march through london calling for the 'death of those who insult islam' (incitement, pure and simple). No one got arrested. And this was not over a murder, it was over some cartoons.
My point being, how has this been allowed? As far as I can see, New Labour in another attempt to retain the Muslim vote, have allowed this 'protest' to go on unhindered, despite its obvious racist and extremist overtones. Why are they allowed to get away with it?
Double standards once again lol. |

| Got a link for the BNP thing? We kind of need to see the details in order to draw a comparison. |
