so, what do muslims 'in here' think of this? do you respect the freedom of speech or is blasphemy so offending that it supercedes it?
btw, i should mention that it was a crazy right wing fundy christian magazine that published the cartoon in norway. their motive should be as obvious as it is cynical... |

There are 2 things that you have to put in mind about this issue:
1- The majority of arab muslims believe in conspiracy theory and this hidden war against Islam. So they wont understand the fact that the news papers who published these cartoons dont represent the Danish and the Norwegian governments.
2- Most muslims are very attached to their religion, it doesnt matter if they even pray or not or follow exactly the teachings of their religion. So when they hear that someone is attacking their religion they get very excited and this excitement could, unfortunately, lead to violent actions because I believe that muslims nowadays muslims dont follow the spirit of Islam because of ignorance mostly. |

| so you're saying that the majority of arab muslims don't respect freedom of speech? how can democracy ever get a foothold in the middle east if that is the case... |

We don't say that. But we have a right to protest, am I right?
And I agree with pharaoh on this one. Ignorance was the result of this protest, but at the same time, this desecration does cause outrage.
Oh, and no democracy is perfect to begin with. |

protest all you want, see if the rest of the world cares...
anyway, that was not my point. muslims have made death threats and as cnn reports:
Quote: Masked gunmen on Monday briefly took over a European Union office
that is absolutely crazy and kind of sad at the same time. freedom of speech is one of the basic pillars of democracy, but maybe the middle east and democray aren't 'meant' for each other... |

CNN, CNN. Wow. That is the most unreliable source on the planet. It focuses on what a few radicals do, not what the majority of Muslims are really doing.

Peaceful boycott. They have a right to do so.

That's because the Middle East is under the rule of a few radicals (Saudi Arabia and Iran) as well as corrupt secular politicians (the rest of the Arabs world). So yes, freedom of speech seems to be incompatible in the Middle East. Even Muslim theologians are locked up by secular governments. And in fact, more so happens to good Muslim theologians. |
