hi,
i have questions of about home networking.
i have an ethernet connection to my external modem which is hooked up to my telephone jack; im getting roughly upto 3 megabits/sec for my internet service. I want to hook up my other computer, in another room.
what is the difference if any, between a hub and router (in internet networking terms) and which one is the best possible solution for my problem? any brand suggestions?
thnx and 'preciate it. |

Linksys 4 port router.
$50>>> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16833124001
You only need a hub if you are connecting an office full of PC's. 4 is plenty.
If you have a laptop you may want to go wireless, which will be a little more money. That way you can go anywhere in your home with the laptop. |

Do you mind running a Cat-5e cable into that other room for your other computer? If yes, you might want to consider a Wireless Router, it is my personal taste to avoid wireless if at all possible, but that's me, just make sure you secure it nice and tight with a strong WPA-PSK key, hubs are fairly useless as far as networking goes IMHO. And for connection sharing you will absolutely need a Router, not a hub (unless you set up one of your computers as a gateway, don't do it, it's stupid.) |

Do yourself a favour and, please don't buy Linksys, it's crap.
I'd go with D-Link. |

Those encryption keys are useless. You cannot secure wireless.

Well using that logic you cannot secure anything, guess what? bulls**t
With MAC address filtering, no SSID broadcast, and WPA-PSK encryption it would be hard as all f**k to break into your wireless network.
I believe you are referring to WEP encryption, which is broken, |

| Depending on how big your home is (I.E. Don't want to stretch a cable all over your house) get a wired router. I did a little experiment, and monitered my kb/sec with a wire and without. With I get about 6 times that of withouth, and that's right next to the router, think of what it must be in another room. |

Right, I didn't make a suggestion or anything before you came along trying to knock a five star product with a mediocre brand. |

I've had a lot of Linksys products crap out on me, and D-Link has never crapped out on me, and that is what i use as the basis of my argument.
And the basis of your argument is that one is "five star"?
Way to knock real world application with pointless ratings. I'm sure your parents are proud of you, what a fine citizen you have become. |

Newegg is customer rated and is NEVER wrong. Anyone who builds PC's knows this. |

I've had SMC, Linksys and d-link. The SMC failed and I got another one. Then it would get hot and shut down. So I gave it to my buddy and bought a Linksys Wireless G, we needed the wireless for my wife's VPN at work. I was able to make it work without the wireless feature anyway. But the Linksys I have now is the best so far. I had another Linksys in the early days of home routers and I took it back. It did suck. But the one I have now has worked flawlessly for over a year now. |

| I use a d-link router with a linksys Access Point for my wireless. Works fine. Neither seem to be crap for me. |

Ok, perhaps I don't have the money for pretty little speakers and a flatpanel monitor, but my setup is not bad at all. (And linux makes everything more fun)(Notice the wonderfully reliable D-Link wireless router atop the physical KVM switch)
