I would like to take Suse 10.1 or maybe a much smaller distro and before I burn the cd, remove grub and relace it with grub2 to try it out, which is so new it's not on any distros yet. Will I have to rewrite the .conf for that, and how do you do that? Will I just have to edit it and add a 2, and a version number if it has one, or is much more complicated than that?

You should be able to replace that after you install they system.

Basicly its a pointer to the config file which then gives further commands back.

Does the Grub or Grub2 web page have the installing instructions? I know this is a hands on install so they should have someplace to start. Like the location of the files to replace.

You should be able to keep the config file and use it for both.

I don't why I was thinking I had to do it before, it's a bootloader not an installer, I get those two mixed up i guess.

No problem I get everything mixed up.

More than likely Grub2 is just an update to handle new harddrive sizes and type and other unseen (and often unneeded) things plus more of that "bling" graphics everyone has been asking for. Just a dress-up-date.
