Quote: Over the last three years, there has been a trend in the result of Presidential elections all across South America; time and time again, Presidents of a Leftist inclination have been elected, with varying degrees of sucess and adherence of to the Socialist cause – this phonomenon has deeply disturbed Washington, the Latin American Right (Reduced to a few moonbats, like the one writing right now) and the European Union. |

| Well, so what?! Let there be a leftist rise. Who's it gonna hurt? No one. Just because they oppose Bush's admin doesn't mean they're a threat. |

Well sign of the times, up to the people of the those countries.
America seems to have a problem with the S or C word. Mind you I cannot see what the fuss is about. Also I am not sure why the EU would care. |

A time for change i would say....
Latin America has suffered so much from dictatorships in the past decades. It's time for a major shift. But it must be done by modern criterias. Chile showed the way and the other countries follow. Hope that this expands in Colombia too, which is forever administrated by drug barons...
Couldn't they use coke in another way? not just for drugs? |

My friend Teacherakis put it actually right!!! It is like a simple equasion:
Longtime dictatorships supported by foreign superpowers + poor living conditions, unhappiness, suffering, persecutions, murders = NEED FOR A CHANGE
Latin America has experienced the hard way what dictatorship means, under these highly oppressive conditions where politics don't function right, there's no opposition, no resistance, so free speech, it is normal for some kind of reaction to occurre. Since there are no right parties "clean" from old sinners and the memories are still alive, people resort to the left for salvation.....It is caracteristic that Lula's campaigns were promising to assure for a every brazilian child a meal per day, can you imagine the poverty? Is that poverty normal in the framework of a quite rich continent??
I can't really understand why some react so badly??? What are they afraid of? People, people, the COLD WAR is OVER!!!!!!! |

Great point. Unfortunately, many people are still living in the Cold War, including Dubya, who, in the words of my Greek friend SpartanPhalanx, is "the biggest dingbat of them all". And TeaCHeRaKiS, good insight as well. |

The cold war never ended, its just the players who changed.
As for the left in latin America, thats always been there, remember Castro, Che, Farq? The only reason South America isnt socialist now is because the United States made sure that there are no socialists (enemies) in its sphere of influence (people in the USA feel that all of the Americas are rightfully theirs due to manifest destiny) - which is why we ended it up with CIA installed tyrants like Pinochet instead. |

Good points, all in all. It's all about "democracy"...
"democracy" = government chosen that fits the needs of superpowers. |

Many people seem to ignore that Communism was an ideology that originated from within Europe. It spread like a wildfire thru East Europe, Russia and East Asia. America prides itself on being one of the few bastions of Free Market and Individual freedom, and positioned herself as the Champion to counter Communism during the Cold War.
However, today, as Americans faced stiff overseas competition in various sectors of their industry more and more American citizens are calling for protectionist policies from the Federal gov't. Is America moving towards socialism? Will America maintain the discipline in industry to compete in the global market or will there be a knee-jerk reaction to keep the Free-Market in check? Can America maintain the unity that is the United States yet still grant people the personal freedom they desire? |

Latin America is the U.S.'s sphere of influence. What happens in the U.S. for the next few decades will determine the future of Latin America. |
