No.. just as hard rock doesn't contribute to some teenager offing himself because he's clinically depressed.

I mean, come on. Why in the world would anyone make the connection between music of any genre, and peoples actions and the consequences of those actions?

It would truly be a weak minded person that was ruled by anything that was considered entertainment.

It's a little thing called personal responsibility.

Indeed. Music doesn't take away the ability to choose. When one does an act, they choose to do this act. I blame music for nothing.

I believe that rap music increases abortion rates the same way that gospel music lower abortion rates: not at all.

It's like the silly claim that some preacher made in all earnestness when rock music came out, that the beat similar to the heart beat and could stop the heart.

Fundie nay-sayers have ALWAYS made "just because I say so" claims wildly picked out of the air to support their crazy claims and desire to control other's lives.

Does your question imply that you believe it may? And if so, why?

Gospel Rap, however, has been scientifically proven to induce fetuses to commit suicide.

I can prove it with graphs.

Probably no more than baptism contributes to drowning.

Dunno about abortion, but rap has increased a host of other problems: gangs, murder, rape, etc.

Do you really believe this?

I'm rather of the opinion that gangs, murder, and rape have contributed to the popularity-- and brutality-- of rap music. Art reflects life; only very rarely does life reflect art.

I don't know about abortion, but as far as rap music effecting teens in a negative fashion, there might be some validity to that. Last year I helped a friend do some research for his sociology class on this subject. Here's one of the links I saved. There are more studies out there in college libraries on this subject.

People choose to do the things they do.

Music doesn't make them do it.

Why is this so hard?

I think that the vast majority of people are determined to believe that the world is a clean, logical place and that basic principles of fairness and justice apply to human behavior.

When confronted with evidence to the contrary, they look for an explanation-- any explanation-- that doesn't involve facing the kinds of sheer mindless brutality that human beings inflict upon one another.

That's why you can change so many peoples' minds so easily-- on almost any issue-- by showing them ugly pictures or telling them ugly stories. They've never been forced to really look at the world before.

Well first case:

I was watching PBS, and a pre-school teacher was telling us how many of the kids knew all the lyrics to the 50 cent rap songs, but couldn't do their ABC's.

I'm a 16 year old white male from a place where rap music and MTV are held in much higher esteem than college, jobs, rational thought, whatever.

I think that rap music DOES contribute to higher abortion rates, because it contributes to higher pregnancy rates. While any genre of music that preaches sex, drugs, non-accountability is a potential social menace, rap music tops the list IMO because of the image that rap creates. "Gangsta" rappers shown in a rap video talking about the nobility of drug dealing whilst bumping and grinding with women make people want to experience that.

I'm not blaming rap more than network television for those retarded reality TV shows that portray stupid, muscular guys and ditsy, perfectly sculpted females putting whipped cream on eachother, so don't think I'm just rebelling against rap because of its annoying, monotonous bass beat. I hate country too, and think the whole drunk urban cowboy/girl image is just as stupid, but I don't think it creates as strong a bond to culture as rap does.
