Well, here it is: I changed my father's position on gay marriage.

My parents are hard-core right-wing Catholic Republicans. They are letting me run off, with great concern, to a very liberal college in New England. They have repeatedly expressed their concern that I will get "Turned into a flaming liberal *said with disgust*".

This changing of my father's view was not easy... in fact, arguments about it have gone on for years and have caused my parents to both question my sexuality (because obviously, if you are pro-gay-rights then you must be gay) and to threaten cutting off all financial support. Actually, among other arguments, this is one that has really messed up my relationship with my dad.

But I did it. I was shocked. I tried a friendlier approach to my dad, and we actually had a rational debate without screaming or throwing anything. The next day, my dad just unexpectedly shuffled up to me and said, "Hey... er... I uhh thought about uhhh what you errrrrrr said.... and.... uh... well, I've changed my position....... I mean, I still think that gay people are sick in the head.......... but.....uhh.... they should have the same benefits and rights to adopt kids.......... not that I condone it......... but......... uhhh.......... yeah, it makes sense......"

I just shrugged, and I was like, "That's great, Dad." But so far, this is the greatest victory of my little life.

:-D

EDIT: Let me add that my Dad is no idiot.... on the contrary, he is the smartest man I know, even though I disagree with him on almost everything. Knowing that a brilliant man like my Dad can still be stupid instills in me a sense of respect for opponents, because there are good reasons and good intentions behind every widely held view.

Wow - when did Jerry Farwell join the forums?
Why is this position stupid & why, it appears from your statement, that the 'right-ist' position isn;t stupid?

No, if you bothered to really read what she said, it was the outcome of a rational debate, not brainwashing.

As for it being a 'stupid' position, that's just your unsupported opinion.

With regard to it being 'leftist', I think that shows some unhealthy rigidity in your thinking. Do you just assume that anything that disagrees with your positions is 'leftist'?

Clearly, she does feel some sense of accomplishment for having persuaded her father to see reason. Why you have such a problem with that is anyone's guess, I suppose.

Maybe next time you should enter the thread with the intention of debating, not just spewing.

Congratulations!

To the other guy, I didn't know that debate was brainwashing. I guess we are all here to brainwash.

Ha. "Brainwashing" is what my Dad would have liked to do to me from the start, and what he DID to my other siblings and my mother.

I was actually brainwashed, when I first joined this forum a few months back I was a hardcore libertarian, now I am more of a paleoconservative. I have seen the light since then. Used to be on Debate Politics but it was too dang slow.
