By JAKE TAPPER

WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 3, 2006 — The Concerned Women for America were … well, concerned. Outraged, even. Was Barbie becoming part of the transgender movement?

On Dec. 30, CWA, a leading Christian conservative group, noted on its Web site that on the Barbie Web site, www.Barbie.com, "there is a poll that asks children their age and sex."

You can see a screen grab of the poll here.

The age choices were 4 to 8 but children "are given three options for their choice of gender": I am a Boy, I am a Girl and I Don't Know.

Bob Knight, director of CWA's Culture and Family Institute, said Barbie manufacturer Mattel was being influenced by the "transgender movement."

To pose "this transgender question at little girls, they've really crossed the line," Knight said, who added that "bisexuality gender confusion" is the Web site's agenda, which is "very dangerous."

The concern comes after a conservative boycott of Mattel's American Girls dolls. The American Family Association and the Pro-Life Action League protested that some American Girls dolls were wearing "I Can" wristbands, which support Girls Inc. Girls Inc. is a national, nonprofit organization that promotes education and self-esteem programs, as well as sex education, and supports abortion rights and the acceptance of gays and lesbians. The Mattel-Girls Inc. partnership ended on Dec. 26.

But Mattel, which also manufactures Barbie, said the Barbie incident is much ado about nothing.

"This was just an innocent oversight," says Lauren Bruksch, a spokeswoman for Mattel. As a rule of thumb, Bruksch said, the questionnaires at barbie.com always try to have a neutral answer or nonresponse option. For gender, this third option should have been "I don't want to say," rather than "I don't know." The Web site has since been fixed.

Knight had said CWA would contact Mattel to investigate the matter, but Bruksch said Mattel first heard of the complaint when ABC News called for comment.

I always wondered what was up with Barbie's crotch! Now I know its part of Mattel's secret evil transgendered agenda! or should I say... TRANSGENDA?!

seriously though. what is up with these people? there's got to be something better out there to be 'concerned' over than this.

To quote Tracker it's "CrotchWorship". People are far too concerned about superfical issues and not the real issues affecting us. Don't like the dolls, then don't buy them for your kids. So simple, problem solved.

When people make huge issues out of things like this, they undermine the free market. I'm sure the Christian conservatives would ban Barbie if they could.

Ha! I'm sure the Christian social conservatives would ban alot of things if they could (like everything that creates pleasure). That's why we have to keep fighting the good fight against their fanaticism.

It's a legitimate question, in my opinion. There are a small minority of children who truly aren't sure of what gender they are. They don't call it gender confusion for nothing...

Clearly, there is an agenda behind these dolls. Don't you see? Families are being torn apart because of these Barbie dolls.

I can tell you one thing, this news article made me go out and buy a Barbie. I couldn't even stop there, I got a Ken doll too.

*turns the volume up*
The summer wind came blowin' in
From across the sea
It lingered there so warm and fair

*Barbie and Ken ride away in their hot pink car*

Man, you are a product of the brainwashed propaganda that North Korea endlessly pours out. Seriously, go out to America or any other European nation or even South Korea and see how they live compared to you. No offense, but every well developed nation eats three meals a day, get adequate pay, and are not ruled by someone who is 4'3 and says that he is the God when all he is is just a fanatical insane despot.

P.S. You're not from North Korea. Seriously, N. Korea doesn't allow the internet to be in there. Nice try.

Oh yea, and if you are, well don't be suprised to see them knocking at your door due to an anonymous tip

That's how all americans think isn't it? If you don't live in america or you live in a third world nation you are a monkey that cannot operate a computer, much less own one, get off your attitude. Ok?

Hmm... I thought Kim Jung Il doesn't want his ppl having any foreign contact whatsoever.

So even if you're the person who knocks on the doors. you'll still be eligible for death.

P.S. As a Christian, I won't do anything to you.

Also, search online for how other nations are living. North Korea is not a paradise as told by Dear Leader. I go to school, work hard to get a good paying job, have a home with heat, can go out and have fun and spend money with my friends, and get three meals a day.

Ok, but if you thing he's so great, list some reasons.

But why would a toy company that markets to little kids propose a question such as this? What benefit would they get by a little kid answering I DON'T KNOW to a 50/50 question? This question would be geared, I think, to more of an adult audience. I am sure there are people out there that don't know what they 'are', but probably not at 10 years old. And even if it were a legitimate question, how do they know a 9 year old kid would answer honestly?

As far as the Christian conservatives as noted above.....everyone is gay to them it seems. The Telletubies (granted they are freaky), Sponge Bob Square Pants - where do they get these ideas? Back in the day, dolls didn't have faces on them so that they wouldn't represent a 'soul' ( I guess people thought a doll w/o a face is guaranteed not to have a soul{?}), now dolls have faces. So when are these people that acuse Spong Bob about being gay at now? WHy aren't they complaining about dolls with faces?
Good grief - spend you time & $ on things like poverty, homeless families & the like - Sponge Bob isn't worth it quite frankly.

True but why would (or should) a toy company take up the cause themselves? If they truely wanted a study on this, it should have been done through a more contorlled environment. I could log on & answer the question NOT SURE & skew their results for crying out loud.
