So recently I came by this article (which was actually written in '98) about contemporary art. In modern times, anything can be considered art. A piece of chopped up wood can be considered art if it is presented in a manner that is remotely "aesthetic." 100 years ago, people would say, "that's not art." IF art is what is beautiful, then will something be art to one person and not another? I think there is certainly a distinction between "good art" and "bad art," just as there is between a good book and a bad book. Can art be natural? or does it have to be manmade? (or arguably, Divinely made, in which case the universe itself would be a work of art).
Does beauty qualify as art? |

| Art is subjective. Anything can be art to anyone. I don't think much of today's "artwork" should be classified as such, but many people disagree, and I accept the fact that my artistic values are particularly old fashioned. |

Not necessarily. Art is an expression, it does not have to express beauty. Must beauty express or imply art? Beauty simply exists; art gives evidence to this existence. |

I agree with you, except I believe that all art has some form of beauty to it, and without it there is no expression. |

Is beauty in the art, the expression or both? Are they inseperable?
Art can express and expose an ugly aspect of human nature for a higher moral purpose. In such a case the art itself may be less "beautiful" than the intentions of its expression. |

| Exactly. To you it may be ugly. To anyone else, it may be beautiful. This is the basis for art. |

Even when art is "ugly", if the artist has done his job then there will be a beautitful expression of that uglyness. |

Simple, mundane, ordered and yet disordered, something you might see on the wall of a hair stylist's shop.
Do you have any repressed homosexuality?
:P Just kidding... |

| homosexual? Speaking about psychology and forms of expression and how it reflects on personality, you know I read somewhere that if you have a tendency to wear or paint things red and black, it demonstrates an inner psychotic tendency. = ) To be specific, a psychotic tendency for rage and madness- My favorite colors are red and black..... hmmm.... I don't think i'm quite psychotic. |
