Bush Cutting U.S. Combat Troops in Iraq
FALLUJAH, Iraq - Just days after Iraq's elections, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld on Friday announced the first of what is likely to be a series of U.S. combat troop drawdowns in Iraq in 2006.

Here's the thing. I know alot of people are saying that we're abandoning the Iraqi people by withdrawing troops. The fact of the matter is, however, that we have 138,000 stationed troops over there right now. Sending 7,000 home is hardly abandonment.
Like many Americans, I am still a little unclear as to what our exact objectives are at this point in Iraq. Without knowing the specifics of how much manpower is needed, it seems like the right call to start sending troops home. It is likely that we will not send any more troops to Iraq except to train Iraqi military. Now that the elections are complete, it would also seem that we have completed the most difficult task. The next objective seems to be building the Iraqi government.
More good news is that the 20,000 troops deployed during the elections will come home in January. Hopefully there are no more wars anytime soon so that they can stay here in peace.
It would seem as though the Iraqi troop training is going well. Whether you are for or against the war, you have to root for the Iraqis to be able to maintain their own country. You also have to admit that having the Iraqis as allies in their Middle East positioning is huge for us. I think when all is said and done, as unpopular as this invasion has been, this will be a good move for all involved. Yes, I'm a Democrat and I said it.
Whatever the real reasons behind the war in Iraq, overthrowing a ruthless dictator is the right thing to do. It has been only two weeks since the elections were completed. I guess we just have to wait and see how this new government shapes up, and if our new allies can hold their own. |

I think you may be a little naive as regards the sentiments the Iraqi people hold for the Allies. You appear to believe that a majority of this population is supportive of Western occupiers in their country, which I really don't think is the case.
I do support troup withdrawal but I think it would be better for all three factions in Iraq to operate independently within separate states. rather than trying to create a democratic government out of a tribal society. |

| You have no basis for saying that the majority of Iraqis is not supportive of us. Not to mention, I never made that claim. |

You've got a good head on your shoulders there liford.
An extrodinarily rational view on the situation from someone on the left I'd say.
Certainly refreshing to someone that sits right of the middle. :-D
Cheers! |

Our purpose was to install a US-friendly government, establish military bases as a means for further conquest of Eurasia, and to colonize Iraq's economy.
The idea of the US "leaving" Iraq is absurd. The problem for the US is that the Iraqi Resistance has prevented their takeover from happening.
The US is being humiliated.
God bless the Iraqi National Resistance. |

Ah... misread yet still accused of hypocrisy based on your assumptions of my position and my wish for your departure, cute. And such a nice way to have begun your life here on this board.
Allow me to enlighten you oh subjective one- My wish for your immediate removal from the country of your contempt had nothing to with my 'supposed' support for this war, nor the administration for that matter. It had everything to do with your treasonous attitude.
So, put your money where your mouth is and join 'le resistance' if that suits you, but again, don't let the door hit you on your way out.
You won't be missed. |

Shut the f**k up about that. I do believe that its blacks that benefit for programs like affirmative action. Its blacks that get extra points toward college entrance test. Not the white man. The only one keeping people down is themselves! Slavery ended over 140 years ago......... get the f**k over it!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Good Gosh "Slayer" you surprise me
A ghetto is an evil unnatural construction. A crime committed by society.
Go tell all the black and brown-skinned children who are walled up in the Enclaves of Civic Terror. Go tell all the mothers whose children have BURNED TO DEATH in apartment fires because their city-owned apartments are never inspected.
Go tell all the grandparents who DIE in the waiting rooms of these cesspools you call "public hospitals" because it takes three days to get a bed.
No viable human society condemns children to violence, disease and death in a ghetto.
As far as slavery is concerned, don't you patriotic Amerikkkans sing songs about your "oppressed forefathers"? Don't you have parades and crap like that? You're all choked up about your "oppressed forefathers who died", right?
Get over it already. :moon: |
