I would post this in the lounge, but I figured since this is the UK sub-forum I had a better chance of geeting real responses from people who currently live there.

I am interested in moving to either Blackpool, Staines (In western London), or Newcastle.

I found Houses in Blackpool and NewCastle, but I've had no luck in Staines.

Blackpool:

http://www.homesonsale.co.uk/index.php?page=out&id=5323

Some off-shoot place called MiddlesBorough:

http://www.homesonsale.co.uk/index.php?page=out&id=23316

I really like that one.

Newcastle:

Any help would be appreciated...I'll settle for a Flat, but I detest Terranced housing...My ideal choice would be a bungalow though.

My advice to you regarding housing is this:

Staines - stay out. It's a high-crime, low-income area, and not worth all the hassles that living there would cause.

Houses in the UK are generally built very shoddily (I say this coming from Denmark) - houses which are considered to be in good nick over here seem to be coming apart at the seams. Central heating is only just becoming standard fare, and double glazing is a luxury. Insulation is a joke here, with very loose-fitting windows that rattle in the wind being the norm.

Be prepared to spend a lot on heating - if it's below freezing outside, it'll be like that inside, as well, if your heat's not on.

What makes you think of these places? (Blackpool, Staines (In western London), or Newcastle). They seem like odd places really... Could you say what you want out of your stay in the UK and what you like doing then we can help you in chosing the right place to go...

I wanted to move somehwere near London, but the housing costs in the area are way to high.

Blackpool is nowhere near London, but the housing costs are pretty low and the houses are nice.

The only thing I'm looking to get out my stay is to live there, that's about it.

That's odd....They have gardens for every house, but central heating is new?... I live in PA, I'm used to cold weather, but I'll probably look into getting central heat if the house doesn't come with it.

What I meant is, what sort of scene are you into? Pubs and clubs, the outdoors, moutains, the sea, the arts, sports....

All the modern houses are built with central heating and double glazing. It is the older houses that don't always have it but then they tend to have a fire place which keeps your house very warm if you use it.

I know Blackpool very well. I grew up just down the road in nearby Lytham St Annes. You might want to consider getting a house in nearby Lytham if you are thinking of moving to the Fylde coast. Lytham is a much nicer area to live than Blackpool but it is well within reach of Blackpool if you're thinking of working there. The housing is a bit more expensive, but the place has a lovely victorian charm that Blackpool lacks, being a bit more gaudy. The nightlife in Blackpool is a lot more lively though if you're into that sort of thing.
Plus there are a lot of other americans living in the area working on contracts related to the BAe Systems factory at Warton (were incidently, many of Washington's ancestors once lived and are buried).....

HEH, I'd advise you to live somewhere close to a major airport - that way you can enjoy Europe and not just the UK..

Blackpool has it's own airport from which you can book flights to most European countries......

Unfortunately though in the summer it fills up with white trash from Liverpool.

That's why you don't actually live in Blackpool, but you buy a house in nearby Lytham St Annes or Ansdell, and commute to Blackpool if neccessary.......

Whoa now ben, the middlands and north are a seriously bad idea ( no offence to the scousers, scallies and geordies out there) you could do so much better.

Indeed London is probally going to be out of the question, houses there are astronomically expensive, and if you want to get a desent job it would involve locating your self outside of london in the suburbs and commuting in, trust me on that its not fun.

Staines again, funny but bad idea, your generally want to avoid the areas of habiation to the west of london, the blitz plus socialist town planning has resulted in some funky archatecture in thouse areas.

You genearlly want to locate your self towards the south of england my suggestions would be Bristol (nice city, contains best pub in the world, allright music scene, has a bit of a crime problem though), Southhampton , Portsmouth and generally the suburbs surrounding these cities are pretty nice. Cornwalls another option (the jutty out bit below wales), but its a bit spare economically wise.

If you don't mind the cold scotland is also an exelent choice, allthough i would concentrate on Edinburg/Aberdeen as oposed to glasgow or dundee.

It would be usefull knowing what you have in the way of job prospects Ben, put simply certain industries in the u.k are rather localised.

Edinburgh has higher living costs than Glasgow and Glasgow is an excellent place to live as long as you avoid the east end and certain parts of the north side, it's also THE place to be if you like indie.

But yeah, Dundee is a **** and Aberdeen and Inverness are nice, as is Stirling which is handy for commuting to both Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I also agree with Thundertaker, Lytham St Annes is a really lovely place, i love the pier that only touches water when it rains.

As i said, the east end and north side are the places to be. 3 murders overnight including that of an ex-terrorist gunrunner, awsome place.

I lived in the east end of Glasgow when I was a baby. I'm very glad we moved.

I'ld suggest the East Midlands somewhere, Nottingham is a nice place as long as your not in the middle of the student area, the Meadows or NG6.
I'ld suggest somewhere there (Stratford) or Lytham St Annes.

Doesn't Nottingham have the highest burglary rate in Britain?

Burgarly because of Students (largest student population in the UK) and gun crime is almost entirely confined to the two areas I mentioned. Its not like Wolverhampton for example when theres a shooting the in the city centre every few months. Its the NG6 area thats the worst for crime of all sorts- just don't do there.

Outside the city centre its a great place.
