Interesting stuff, check this out:
In Bamidbar, there are two times where the nation is counted-chapter 1 and 26. Now, the second comes after the plague due to the Jews worshipping Baal-Peor.
Reuvein- 46,500/43,730 (-2,670)
Shimon- 59,300/22,200 (-37,100)
Gad- 46,650/40,500 (-6,150)
Yehuda- 74,600/76,500 (+1,900)
Yissachar- 54,400/64,300 (+9,900)
Zevulun- 57,400/60,500 (+3,100)
Ephraim- 40,500/32,500 (-8,000)
Menashe- 32,200/52,700 (+20,500)
Binyamin- 35,400/45,600 (+10,200)
Dan- 62,700/64,400 (+1,700)
Asher- 41,500/53,400 (+11,900)
Naftali- 53,400/45,400 (-8,000)
Total- 603,550/601,730 (-1,820)
(Side point- In first count, Ephraim is mentioned first; second-Menashe is first)
Now clearly, the big drops are Shimon (37,100), Ephraim (-8,000), Naftali (-8,000), Gad (-6,150), and Reivein (-2,670).
Now, just 24,000 died in the plague due to the idol worship. So my question is, what the hell happened to these tribes? What did they do? |

| I think that these two countings happen 40 years apart. This maybe just a fluctuation based on birth rates. The death rate during those years was probably relatively fast, since the punishement for the spies. |

Even so, for 37,000 to die is insane. Shimon mmust have done something. The odds of that many people dying and not enough children being born to counter is very slim. I mean, look at MEnashe, they grew a lot. Something must be there, in my opinion. |

In between censuses you have:
The incident with Korach which may have depleted Reuvein.
The incident of the spies and the ones who went to fight and died.
The incident of the complainers, where people died in a plague.
And as you mentioned the thing with Midyan and Baal Peor.
Don't forget Shimon may have been especially hard hit, after all it was a leader of Shimon that Pinchas speared.
So alot of stuff did happen. |

Still, 37,000? They would have to be hit hard in all three. |
