Specifically, the philosophy of calculating pleasure versus pain to determine which actions are best? Or the more general category of consequentialism, the belief that the good of an action stems from its consequences?

Though it may be difficult to completely make a claim that one ethical theory is the best way for us to live, this one is the best that I've seen so far.

This one is great by its own terms. Many fail even in that regard.

When this is calculated on a mass level the consequences for the individual can be quite disconcerting.

When I think of this I always think of the "Star Trek" episode where they find a society that runs it's wars by computer simulation and then requires it's citizens to report to so-called "disintegration chambers" to actualize the simulated casualties. The arguments they made to defend their society sounded like arguments in favor of this philosophy.
