Well first of all the Kurds arent a sect of Islam!
Kurds are a nation that are living in Turkey and Iraq and Syria. Kurds want to have their own country. And bla bla bla
Ok so now to topic:
Islam is not like Christianity,we dont have Catholics and Protestants and Orthodox. The differences between the Shia and the Sunni arent that big. Cause both follow the Koran. So what are the differences between the Shia and the Sunni? These differences are mainly political, and through political reasons they modify slightly some practises.
In short, the Shia are a group of people who believe that Caliph Ali should have been the Caliph right after prophet Muhammed death. They praise Ali. And they feel responsible for his death (during the civil war) and the death of his son. That is why you see them torturing themselves in the streets in their festivals.
Now there are some very tiny muslim sects out there, and their practise of Islam is really weird and strange. You have, for example, the Druz in Syria where I heard that their leader or their Skeikh (priest) prayes for them.

you can find more info here:

I thought the difference was that the two groups were created post Mohammeds death, following a disagreement about who would be in charge? One group belived it should be his son, the other group didn't like his son and decided it would be someone they nominated. It wasn't his son and for the following 1400 years the argument was never resolved? Might be wrong but I thought that was the story...

Yes and I said that in my post:
"In short, the Shia are a group of people who believe that Caliph Ali should have been the Caliph right after prophet Muhammed death. They praise Ali. And they feel responsible for his death (during the civil war) and the death of his son."
The differences are mostly political.
