Nominations for the Tory leadership close today, and we only have 4 candidates remaining: David Davis, David Cameron, Ken Clarke and Liam Fox
Tory MPs will now go through closed-ballot voting, eliminating 2 - leaving 2 for the grassroots members to decide the winner. A new leader should be in place by early December. Its make ya mind up time.
Also interesting in the evil Murdoch press today, is this poll:
Sky News
Quote: Conservative voters are in danger of backing another loser in their leadership contest, according to a Sky News poll.
Tory supporters think that David Cameron will get the top job but Labour and Liberal Democrat voters fear Ken Clarke the most.
Our poll shows that Conservative disaffection with the former Chancellor goes even further.
A quarter of the Tory voters who took part said they would consider switching to another party if Mr Clarke became leader.
At the same, more than a quarter of Labour and Lib/Dem supporters said he was a vote winner. They said they would consider voting Conservative next time around if Mr Clarke was in the driving seat.
About 5,000 people took part in the survey for Sky News Online, including more than 2,000 people who said they voted Conservative at the last election in May.
Support for David Davis among Conservatives was down to 14%.
And it's not just their leader who could be a problem.
The Tories need a major revamp if they are to stand a chance in the next General Election.
Almost half (48%) of respondents believe they need to take a good look at their policies, 37% say they need to rethink their core beliefs and another 37% said they need to make their message clearer.
About one in six (16%) think the Conservative Party is beyond saving.
But our survey suggests that outgoing leader, Michael Howard got it right at the last election. Some 22% think that immigration should be at the top of the Tory agenda.
Next on their list: a clampdown on anti-social behaviour (18%) then cutting buearucracy in the public sector, (15%).
Praising former Tory leader Margaret Thatcher, who has just turned 80, 58% of resondents said she put the Great back into Britain - but 52% refused to name her as the country's best PM.
Almost a third believe she increased the gap between the rich and poor and 26% said she created a selfish and money-obsessed society that still exists today.
There is enough there to back up my view - 48% think we need new policies, which i interpret as being interesting and bold policies; 22% think immigration should be top of Tory agenda, I agree it is vitally important; and 1/4 of the party might leave if Ken Clarke is elected leader, and I should think so too.
Any other thoughts? Or is this just the Tories talking to themselves again - do you even care? |

Your right Bury, we tried it once.
Continuous polls have always put the Tories ahead on immigration issues, we oversold the message in the election, because we won it. But on top of health, tax, education and this and that, only a few people will go out and vote Tory simply because it has a clear policy on immigration.
You dont vote for a party simply for its immigration policy. I wouldnt and I was selling the Tories in 2005 on the doorstep.
And for clowns to leave the party if Clarke got elected just go to show their pig ignorant ways that we are associated with. The Tory twats that bluff and fluster at anybody having an opinion different to theirs.
God, I had to suffer the party's stupid view of IDS, but I didn't quit and I doubt I would quit if the same idiots elect IDS2 Davis |
