A New Hampshire commission that was supposed to study 'all aspects of same-sex civil marriage and its legal equivalents' has voted to drop the study and recommend a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage instead. Excerpts from the article.
Commissioners on the state's gay marriage study panel had planned to consider versions of civil unions and marriages adopted in other states. But Sen. Jack Barnes, R-Raymond, proposed his motion recommending a constitutional amendment before commissioners got to that point. It passed, 7-4, with two abstentions and two members absent.
...
Other commissioners were dismayed that the measure was introduced so quickly. Commissioners have been gathering testimony from the public and experts for months -- they are to present their reports to the Legislature by Dec. 1.
"To jump right to the support of a constitutional amendment ... one certainly thinks that perhaps politics played a large part in this vote," said Commissioner Raymond Buckley, a Democrat and former House lawmaker who opposed the motion.
...
"I was surprised that they decided that their purview was to make specific recommendations," Buckley said Wednesday. "I thought it really was to gather information and provide information for the Legislature, for their decision-making process over the coming years."
Gee, you don't suppose the opponents of gay marriage just up and decided they'd better ram this through before the study had the chance to turn up information that would have thwarted their agenda, now do you? |

Come on Mystic, people would never do that.
If the study shows that their beliefs are upheld, or rejected, then act accordingly. However, NH needs to have some cajones and let the data speak for itself. |

The Truth. Which is that there is no rational, legitimate, compelling interest the government could have for not extending recognition to the unions of gay couples. |
