What is the general american position on same sex marriage?

Please understand that I'm not asking for anyones personal opinion! As a European I'd like to have a better idea of how much percent of the US are for and agains same sex marriages. Thanks!

Only 36% of american adults are in favour of legalized gay marriage.

Link? (I'm not disputing the stat - just requesting that you give us the source so we can evaluate it)

Opposition/Support varies from place to place, but it's generally pretty lopsided on the specific question of 'marriage' - the majority being opposed. This site claims the numbers went from 55% all the way up to 68% opposed (comparing data from April 2005 with that of a year earlier):

For what it's worth, I am the only member of the Republican HQ who supports gay marriage.....

I don't know the exact number, but I would agree that the opposition is greater, perhaps far greater than the support....
