I'm reading from Deuteronomy 32:7-9, and I've come across the word "Elyon" (spelled ayin-lamed-yud-vav-nun). He's described as the "Supreme One", and he's described as allocating/granting to Yahweh (Hashem) the people of Jacob (Israel).
What does this mean? Does it mean that there's a diety above Hashem? |

This is another example of where if you really dig into the OT you see the Trinity all over the place. I personally believe that the "Most High" is a reference to the "Father". Jesus is the LORD (the great I AM of the OT).
Here's another example.....
2 Samuel 22
"The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer;
3 My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge;
My savior, You save me from violence.
4 "I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised,
And I am saved from my enemies.
5 "For the waves of death encompassed me;
The torrents of destruction overwhelmed me;
6 The cords of Sheol surrounded me;
The snares of death confronted me.
7 "In my distress I called upon the LORD,
Yes, I cried to my God;
And from His temple He heard my voice,
And my cry for help came into His ears.
8 "Then the earth shook and quaked,
The foundations of heaven were trembling
And were shaken, because He was angry.
9 "Smoke went up out of His nostrils,
Fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it.
10 "He bowed the heavens also, and came down
With thick darkness under His feet.
11 "And He rode on a cherub and flew;
And He appeared on the wings of the wind.
12 "And He made darkness canopies around Him,
A mass of waters, thick clouds of the sky.
13 "From the brightness before Him
Coals of fire were kindled.
14 "The LORD thundered from heaven,
And the Most High uttered His voice. |

I will have to look up what psholtz was actually quoting, but just as a quick reply, the first thing that comes to mind is that this was just another reference to God.
For example:
I can call psholtz the guy with the Strider (from the lord of the rings) avatar, or the "conspiratorial one", and it would make no difference. Would anyone who knows him from these boards have any doubt that I was referring to psholtz in my reply?
I think Elyon is just an adjective which might sometimes be used in reference to God and, perhaps, in some cases, as a name for God. But I'm no theologian.
Does that answer your question Paul? (though I have to admit I like the "conspiratorial one" better) |

Allocating to Hashem? Didn't see that. If you had an extra "le" in front of Hashem...maybe. But it ain't there.
It's just another name of G-d, as uzi said.

I've been on the forum for a while and have seen some other names for Paul. Actually, I think I gave him some myself. I hope he didn't take offense, it was for entertainment purposes mostly. ;) |
