A CHINESE county has been ordered to conduct 20,000 abortions and sterilisations before the end of the year after communist family planning chiefs found that the official one-child policy was being routinely flouted.

The impoverished mountainous region of Huaiji has been set the draconian target by provincial authorities in Guangdong (formerly known as Canton).

Although the one-child policy is no longer strictly enforced in many rural areas, officials in Guangdong issued the edict after census officials revealed that the average family in Huaiji has five or more children.

Many of the terminations will have to be conducted forcibly on peasant women to meet the quota. As part of the campaign, county officials are buying expensive ultrasound equipment that can be carried to remote villages by car.

By detecting which women are pregnant, the machines will allow Government doctors to order terminations on the spot.

Thats f***ing sick. And seems pretty far even for the Chinese. Is it people having more kids by choice or a no-protection thing?

Anyway if thats going on thats a violation of their basic human rights.

Back on topic, the way I see it is either the people follow the 1-child policy or they don't. Think of this, China may be the size of the U.S., but it has much less arable land than the U.S., and the great river basins (Huang or Yellow River, and the Yangtze River) frequently undergoes flooding on a natural disaster scale. In the event of a famine people will starve anyways. Either the chinese have aborted babies or possibly have people starve in the future ...

1 child policy s*cks because Chinese people will most likely prefer boys, also after a time the child will have to support so many people.

To keep the population stable you have to have a 2 child policy in place.

Look at this:

Hmm....

You all make interesting points, except LandofHypocracy (and I don't understand what demosthenes is saying, maybe I should consult locke? [Ahahaha, ender's game humour]) but I will say this 421 (one child policy) isn't working in these areas because it isn't being enforced and the people are so far below the poverty line, it's a poverty blur on the horizon to them. I, being from a rich country am going to have a skewed view on this but wouldn't it be better to offer an incentive to these people in exchange for sterilization? I mean they are very poor, and, personally, I'd give up the ability to reproduce for a way out of an impoverished hell...

oh and Malencontreux China has no taxes

Very true if some families get a girl they throw them into the city dump. This means they are so many more boys than girls guys need to use prostitution to get any.

whats wrong with being a female? china has to much pride in tradition. oddly enough, uneven balance of female/male population=even less population. wow, side effect. unless you know what.
