What is a real homosexual? Is that anything like a real heterosexual? |

Yes, more than some people would like to admit. |

I have more than a few questions about homosexuality, but that's not what I want to get into. Associating all homosexuals with those seen on TV is probably about like hearing about a heterosexual rapist, and assuming that most heterosexuals are indeed rapists. If people could separate TV from real life, then you wouldn't have these kinds of problems. |

It's that and the fact that homosexuals who don't match the stereotypes are basically invisibile unless they say something to indicate it, are obvious about paying more 'attention' to members of the same sex, or openly show affection for one another. All three of these are things that many gay people have to actually give conscious thought to, weighing the consequences - while they're heterosexual peers more or less take the equivalent for granted as safe behaviors. Gay people learn early in life that it is safer to hide their homosexuality. Consequently, we're constantly undercounted. Some people would say that they've never known anyone who was gay, when the reality is that unless they're living someplace extremely isolated or sparsely populated, they probably interact with at least one if not a handful each day and don't have the slightest clue about it.
It's a Catch 22 - we want to be left alone to just live our lives in peace, but if we try to do that without ever letting anyone else know our homosexuality exists, our very right to that existance can become endangered. |

| I like Will & Grace a lot. The portrayal of gay/bi members of the show is a bit stereotypical, but it fits nicely into the show's chemistry. I take issue with QESG because the entire basis of this show is that this stereotyped person can be helped by that stereotyped person. I think it is stupid to create a show for the sole purpose of reinforcing stereotypes. Gay/Bisexual people in the entertainment media should be living normal lives in their shows and we should be learning more about them personally as individuals. |

If anything, doesn't that show hurt both? I think they try hard to show how normal straight guys can accept "flamers" and not be homophobic but really, it doesn't actually do anyone much good in terms of breaking stereotypes, it only reinforces them and that is one of the main causes of racism, sexism and homophobia. |
