I only know one, the son of my work colleague. He is the absolute stereotype - he is exactly what you are imagining when I said the world "stereotype". Yeah, thats the guy, you can see him in your head. He wears pink everywhere he goes, and seems to believe there is a law banning speach in a low, quite manner. Needless to say we don't get on - hes too much of a liberal anyway

The ones I know are very stereotypical. There is never a question as to whether they are gay or straight - you know, because of the way they talk and the way they dress. However, there's no telling how many other gay people there are, that are just "normal."

I'd be getting in on that, if you know what I mean.

I have a lot of gay friends, but that's probably because of where I go when I go out, and where I live*. None of the homosexuals I know fit the stereotype, in fact one friend of mine is an avid football fan.

Lord Hargreaves, I highly doubt you only know one homosexual..... you thought I was going to make a joke about the English, well the jokes on you! Ha!

Oh lordy, I've met hundreds. But I have only about five or six gay friends that I hang around with on a regular basis. They all live in Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti though, so I don't get to see them as often as I would like.

Some of them fit the stereotype, some of them don't at all.

I can name about 30 off the top of my head. I saw anarticle in the NYT some time ago that had some researchdone where bisexuals were shown pornography of bothsexes and the males all werereally only turned on by one sex.The females were truly bisexual, but themales... well, they mentioned some gay saying "you're either gay, striaght or lying." Point is I include bisexuals in my count, including my deviant old roomate (open relationship with his wife).

Anyway, Hargraves, what's the point?

I know two gays: both teachers, one who tried to impose his views upon the entire class. (public School) He fit stereotype pretty well. teh other one was a very objective teacher who I learned a lot from but fat, and fit the fat lesbian stereotype.

More than I can count. Some fit the stereotypes, some don't. I'd say it's about 50/50. A lot of them I would never have picked out as gay. Some I still think are 'confused' and should actually be straight, they don't seem to have a 'gay' bone in their body! And I've known straight people who absolutely fit the stereotype for being gay but seem perfectly happy with their heterosexuality.

The most likely causes for people thinking most homosexuals fit the stereotype are:

1) The ones who are obvious stand out like a sore thumb. You can't miss them, even if you don't personally know anything else about them.

2) Meanwhile the less obvious aren't recognizable as gay at all unless you really know what to look for and/or know them personally.

Result - you know lots of gay people. You just don't know that they're gay because they aren't all obvious and they haven't told you because they think it's none of your business or they've seen/heard how you react to gay people who are obvious and have decided it wouldn't be 'safe' to tell you about themselves.

I'm curious as to why you find that funny. Is it because you can't picture a straight man having the talent to pursue this as a profession, or because you view it as a lowly career unworthy of consideration by a straight man? Or something else?

Actually, I think it's a good question. It's related to the old question of what would happen if every gay person in the world turned purple overnight. Maybe a lot of people's attitudes would change because they'd discover they know a lot more gay people than they had realized before. Or maybe it would just make it that much easier for people to find a focus for their prejudice - after all, we haven't exactly got past other differences in skin color, why would purple gay people be any different than other easily identified minorities? I should note here that skin color isn't the identifier it was once thought to be - science has questioned whether our concept of 'race' is even valid, and there are more and more people of mixed race in the U.S.A. It's despicable that some people have had to try to 'pass as white' simply because some other folk have difficulty passing for human.

My real point of course is that it shouldn't matter - gay, straight, black, white, purple. Why focus on those differences unless it's to celebrate the diversity that makes humanity more interesting? That doesn't mean I buy into the crap that the ideals of each culture should be held in equal esteem - some ideas clearly don't have merit outside the culture that values them. That doesn't mean we can't appreciate the other good things that are part of that culture.

There's a lot about the gay subculture that I don't view positively. That doesn't mean I think gay individuals have less value as people. It shouldn't matter how many of them you know. You should treat people as the individuals they are and value their positive contributions to society, not brand a whole group of people who have little in common outside of their sexual orientation and whatever experiences they've had in direct relation to it as unworthy for what you view as the social missteps or bad acts of a few.

well.. since i hate all gay people... i'm going to have to say that they deserve the shi**y jobs, such as "dancer." i think a straight man is just so much more intelligent and his nice brain can be used for being a lawyer, doctor, etc. let the gays dance and pick out clothing..

Your sarcasm is both unnecessary and unappreciated. If you can't give an honest answer to an honest question (I did leave you the option of 'something else', after all), then you have my permission to shut your hole and troll somewhere else.
