I can't believe how many people are disgusted and amazed at the idea that I won't marry a woman if she isn't Jewish. It's pretty funny, actually. Everyone has the impression that my choices are so severely limited, that it is almost impossible to find a Jewish girl - and they are all convinced that I will fall in love with a Christian girl and my parents will disown me.

Anyone else have a similar situation with their friends acting as though marrying a Jewish woman is a huge deal, when to you it seems like not so big of one?

Just don't marry anyone from Brandeis. ;)

Well, your choices are limited, you will have a harder time finding a Jewish girl (I assume), and it is possible you'll fall in love with and marry a Christian girl (love often wins :)).
But of course, I do understand your position, though I don't share it. It's a deep-rooted tradition, not to mention a religious law (I think...).

Well, your choices are limited, you will have a harder time finding a Jewish girl (I assume), and it is possible you'll fall in love with and marry a Christian girl (love often wins :)).

I'm pretty sure I'll just look for love at the local hillel rather than the local bar/church, and I might have better luck finding Jews.

People meet spouses in bars? Like what do you find there, isn't it more of a "lets have casual sex once or twice" scene? Why would anyone want anyone from there?

Well, there is obviously no punishment for it, so its not law in the enforcement sense. Just that the kids are not considered Jews, unless they convert to Judaism later in life. In Judaism, Jewishness goes by the mother, tribe goes by the father.

Thanks Duchifas. I thought I had seen it in there, just wasn't sure exactly where.

So was this a commandment of all time...or just a commandment not to marry the Canaanites in the taking of the Promised Land?

I think it applies in all cases, how that's derived I am not sure. Can check that for you in August, if you wish. Or google for it.

Is that a serious question? Why did Abraham marry a gentile? How about Isaac and Jacob? How did Jacob marry two sisters?

The laws weren't given yet.

And there were no Jews before Sinai revelation. That's when the nation was formed. Until then it was just Hebrews - a big big family/clan type situation.

What about Boaz? King David came through his line by him marring a Gentile (Ruth)...no?
