Hey Everyone, i'm new to the website and am utterly fascinated by what you all talk about.
I happen to be undertaking a dissertation on Political branding, and i would be very interested to know if you guys percieve the goverment of the U.S.A or the U.S.A as a brand in itself, just like coke or macdonalds - ? and why? what similarities have you noticed?

I voted no. Really, I'm surprised by the 50 / 50 split. Are you talking about the American culture/lifestyle as a brand? To me America is too diverse to have one flavor/brand nailed to its name.

'The Land of Opportunity and Freedom', and 'The American Dream' almost sound like marketing slogans to me. I think the US does sell itself, through Hollywood and through the repeated media portrayal of it as 'leader of the free world'. It would be a hard thing to prove though...

Does America sell itself? Yes of course; what country doesn't. Every sovereign nation has an image, or many images that it wants to potray to the world, and most other countries "brand" opposing nations as well. Propaganda is propaganda, and there will always be a good bit of it meshed in with politics, global or otherwise. I find it rather suprising that this is even a topic. Might I ask, what is your image of America? Do you see us as shallow, without true feelings or beliefs? By the tone of your inquisition, that's how it seems? Welcome, and I look forward to further discourse here and elsewhere in the site.

Large American owned corparations sell america as a brandname, as so many small countries have people that wish to be connected or similair to their "cooler" american counterparts. How often have you seen an american flag in a commerical? Very often. Even though those are often the same stores that export jobs to 3rd world slave shops.

I'm coming into this with votes at 10:6 for the brand, and I'd have to say I agree with it.

My arguement? that beer commercial with the girl in he moon where it goes through the history of America, making them seem like saints, then at the end it's like "____, America's beer"
