Locke25 wrote: And what do you propose? We get rid of our space shuttle & use RUSSIA'S? I'm not a big fan of the Russians. Or do you want to get rid of NASA all together...?
I think our shuttle is a work in progress.. and once we get over this problem we're having now.. I think they'll either improve our current shuttle or make a new one similar to the Russian's. It's not shot to hell. If everytime we ran into a problem & we quit, well I don't think we'd get too far..
Go back and read my posts. I don't think you are reading them.
You are either not comprehending what I am saying or you are not reading the whole post.
Quote: The actual exploration was not market initiated, but Military initiated. Once the military get out of it, the peacetime developments just don’t do the job.
I have never thought of it that way - that is pretty dead on. |

The race to the moon was all about military. The militarization of space was the tipping point of the Cold war. "Star Wars" ring a bell?
Not to be mean but how old are you? This may be why you are not understanding my points of view. |

That is the point. They are not motivated like they used to be. |

ohhhhhhhh. I get it.
Because he said.. "Once the military get out of it, the peacetime developments just don’t do the job."
and then he said.. "That is the point. They are not motivated like they used to be."
so you are both trying to tell me we're not that good anymore because theres no military and motivation? |

How did this become so political? Locke, this isn't about poo-pooing the U.S. for their space program. It's more about what we can to do IMPROVE it!!
It's great that the Russians can come to rescue us, and it probably serves a highly valuable service for the cause of diplomatic relationships. But the issue really is about what the U.S. can do to better it's space program(s).
I believe private industry, in this case, can serve a valuable purpose. |

I'm not poo-pooing. Believe me, I'm the first person that wants to improve it. Hell, I'm actually wearing a NASA shirt while typing this. There. Shows you how much i love it.
Didn't I reply to your post agreeing with you about improvements that should be made? I think i did.
Edit: Me wrote: we should lower the cost of space travel, but not lessen the amount of money given to NASA. if they lessen the amount of money, then fewer explorations will be able to be launched, while lowering the cost of space travel & keeping the amount of money given is the same will allow more explorations.
Yea, sounds like I'm poo-pooing. |

| i don't think it is off topic. we discussed reasons why the peacetime program is so frail with error while the military contractors are working fine. |

He is advocating space exploration - not NASA. NASA is the problem right now - they need to step up to the plate or go by the wayside. |

Well. the military today is concerned more with satellite tech than anything, while space exploration has no commercial apps except industrial laboratories. government programs are the main moltivation for space exploration, but the scientists tend to go on tangents and whatnot.
in any case, the program is pretty much inefficient without a timetable and urgency. |

Kennedy's vision of landing a man on the moon by the end of the 60's was directly born out of the space race between the two military superpowers during the cold war.
This is common knowledge. Is it possible that there is now a generation of Americans who do not recognize that fact? |

This is common knowledge. Is it possible that there is now a generation of neocons who do not recognize that fact? why do you have to bring neocons into this? and complain about politicization? what? |
