Because brutal dictators and dead soldiers have so much in common. You're right though, every single Japanese soldier that died took great pleasure in every innocent person they killed.

Exactly. The current government of Japan and the Japanese people in general have nothing to apologize for. If it's anyone who should be doing the apologizing, it's any living Japanese general who was giving such brutal orders at the time of the second world war... that is, if any of them are alive today.
You can also argue that since many Israeli citizens were not directly involved with atrocities committed by the Israeli Gov't they need not show sympathy for Palestinian victims. If you say Israeli citizens should be held responsible then one can also argue that those who died at the Twin Towers on September 11, 2001 weren't so innocent after all. Those American citizens paid taxes, they elect their representatives, and they fund the government. So with all the support they give to Washington D.C. why should they be absolved of any wrongdoings by the American government?

What bothers me most is not that there are no reparations given to the families of the victims of Japanese aggression, but that there was an active cover-up that they had committed any atrocities during WWII. Japan during WWII was like an adolescent that was put down for too long by the more dominant players, and decided to go on a shooting spree in the school playground.

Among them those died in 1899, when the allied army fell Peking
Among them those died in 1905, Sino-Russian War in Manchuria
Among them those died in border conflict in Manchuria, an attempt to attack Russia
Among them those died since 1930, when Japanese invaded China
Among them those died since 1941, when Japanese attacked South East Asia
Among them those died in Pearl Harbour, Australia and Iwojima….

Can you tell how many of them not died in foreign lands, and not died as an aggressor?

Are they deserved to be visited?
Do Japanese asked themselves, they should not be in the shrine if there was no aggressor?

You forgot point out those japanese soldiers which were killed/captured during Operation August Storm.

Operation August Storm

Some of those 600 000 captured japanese soldiers and generals never returned back to Japan from Siberian concentration and labour camps. They were building brigdes, houses, railways etc. Bones of japanese are still in swamps across the Great Siberia.
There is a tragic japanese song, called "Khabarovsk" dedicated destiny of those prisoners of war.

I totally agree with you. When I was reading a book about Unit 731 I was shocked. Certain things could not ever be forgiven.

Imperial Japan was just as evil in it's methods as Nazi Germany in the west well perhaps slightly less evil. They utilized mass murder, chemical weapons, biological weapons, induced famines, their actions led to death on a collosal scale and they themselves killed tens of millions. We should have as much sympathy for Japan as we do for Nazi Germany which is none.
