If the US suffered a split...
...fighting evolved into opposing geographical fronts...

what would be the action of the UN?

Well, the first thing that springs to mind, is "move their headquarters".

Failing that, I suppose whichever side held New York would get the UNSC seat. It'd depend what the other SC memvers wanted, I suppose, as to whether there was any intervention.

I assume, meanwhile, that the various other relevant agencies would be attempting humanitarian relief in the war-torn zones.

They would all stand up and celebrate the death of the US.....until they realized the checks would stop coming and they would all need to find a new hole to infest.

The UN is a useless organization. If two countries can go against what the UN said than whats the point. I dont really think the UN is a good organization anyway

Well, that's relevant. I coulda sworn we were talking about a fairly interesting hypothetical future situation here, not your opinion of the UN as it stands today.

Also:

Checks stop coming in? America barely pays its dues now, why would the UN miss all those i.o.u notes?!

If America split and a new civil war did open up your problem really wouldn't be the UN. Your problem would be with who had control of your nuclear weapons and whether the commanders of units with the capability to unleash them would have the wisdom to stay out of the conflict. Otherwise, whatever form of radioactive Americans crawled out of their irradiated, war-racked continent would really be looking to the UN to supply things like food aid and blue helmets. Like in the FYR, only bigger and glowing in the dark.

I don't think an arms embargo would work very well...

considering we make the guns.

It would probably split, New York, Massachussets, New Jersy, Florida, California, vs. the rest of the U.S. Course since all of those states don't believe in self-defense, it wouldn't be much of a battle.
Bring the wieners and marshmallows for the big U.N. building roast and farewell party.

LOL - The United States pays more to the UN than any other country by a long shot. I suggest you do a little research on this matter.

Not quite sure I follow the question. What type of split? What fighting?

Ahhh - upon reading the other posts - i guess I follow. - LOL

I think the UN would do whatever it could to facilitate the breakup of teh USA and would immediately move it's headquarters - LOL

Seriously though - the UN has proved that it is powerless when it comes to enforcement. A US civil war might be the one thing that would bring them the strength to send military in under the UN flag to ensure that the civil war was as devastating as possible.
