At least you don't have to pay money to join the catholic church
But I do see your general point. Christianity seemed nutty at first I would think
Yes in Cathoilc communities for hundreds of years people weren't forced to pay a tithe...... Oh wait they were forced to do that.
Most every one & every thing has a less than perfect past. How about living more in the now, than hundreds of years ago? |

| Scientology is a corporate religion that preys on weak minds. It promises people freedom from stress. They believe that stress is caused from aliens putting devices in our heads. :( |

They are a self-help sort of cult. Scientology was created by a science fiction author, who was often quoted as saying "Making up a religion would be a great way to become rich." |

That's long past. I've got a good friend who's a priest. One night at dinner, we talked about the possibility of married priests. He said that, all else considered, it would be impossible. Catholics, at least in the U.S., don't tithe 10% as do Protestants. Few Catholic churches have enough money coming through to support a priest with a family. |

I like what Pope John Paul the second had to say on the issue
"The vow of celibacy is a matter of keeping one's word to Christ and the Church. a duty and a proof of the priest's inner maturity; it is the expression of his personal dignity. "

What is good about scientoliogy is you can observe how religions is formed. Today, where more things are recorded, you can see for yourself how christianity and all the other major religions were formed in a modern setting. It is very interesting. |

If they don't tithe why is the Catholic CHurch the wealthiest orginization in the world? Apparently that gold on the ceilings in the vatican came from.....? |

Gwah? The absolute latest that we can consider celibacy in the clergy to have started is around 800 AD, over 1,200 years ago. Sorry, that's flat out wrong.
Catholics DO tithe, but it's not focused on in the same way that it is in Protestant churches. In Protestant Churches, the expectation is quite explicit and you are reminded several times of what they are asking. In Catholic practices, they do take for collection during every Mass, but very rarely will any sort of theological requirement be brought up that you owe 10%. |

No, it's not. As I said, I discussed it with my friend the priest. He was actually kind of ashamed of the fact that Catholics arent tithing enough. I have no reason to lie about it, as I'm kind of ashamed of it. I know I don't come close to tithing 10%. I know few devout Protestants who don't tithe.
My point also mainly just applies to America. In countries, like Germany, where people pay church taxes, priests could easily afford marriage. |

Let me amend what I said. U.S. Catholics don't tithe. Tithing means donating 10% of your gross income. Anything less is not tithing. Now, maybe historically, they have tithed, but at least in the U.S., we don't.

Talk about lies.....
The rate of child molestation by Catholic priests is similar to the rate of child molestation by married Protestant ministers, both of which have a rate that is lower than the male population as a whole. |

Most of the catholic churches I have dealt with have private cooks. Look at how huge most catholic churches are as a testament to their wealth.
Maybe that priest was from a poor parish, but that isn't indicative to a trend. The church I went to the monseigneur actually blessed Fidel Castro, and was well known in the business world, let alone the countless other wealthy parishes. What a crock, but it isn't surprising hearing a priest want more money. |
