The North Korean Non-Threat
By: Tysic Cummings

During the 2004 United States Presidential elections many of the debates focused on North Korea. Do they have nuclear weapons, and if they do, what are we to do about them? The agreement seemed to be this: We invaded Iraq because they had weapons of mass destruction(wether they really did or not) and so too must we invade North Korea..

There were a lot of good reasons for invading Iraq(a topic that I will not discuss now), but none of those reasons are applicable to North Korea. Simply put: North Korea poses no threat to the United States.

Even if North Korea does have nuclear weapons(a questionable fact) they do not have the capacity to threaten the United States. As a wise man once said, “The hard part is not making the bomb, after all: you can find the instructions to do so on the internet.”. No, the hard part is getting the nuclear weapon to the place you want it. Despite what North Korea may claim, it does not have the capability to strike any US cities, and furthest they can hit is Japan(something they wouldn’t do, because it would piss China off).

But let’s pretend that they could hit the United States, why would they? They know very well that if they fired so much as a single nuclear missile at the United States they would feel the wrath of an angry Jehovah in the form of several hundred nuclear missiles flying their way. Furthermore, they have no motivation to do so. The only ‘beef’, so to speak, that North Korea has with the United States is that we will not leave them well enough alone. Not a bad idea in my book.

The world community needs to recognize North Korea for what it really is, a little kid bidding for attention. If the world ignores him for a while, sooner or later he will get bored, and stop bothering people with his stupid threats. Let’s do ourselves a favor and let China take care of this one. It would save us some men, and China some face.

Which brings me to my final point, which I intend to stress. Not only does North Korea pose no threat, but any invasion of North Korea would be a very bad idea. I’ll support this point by reminded you of the first rule of international politics, “Do not piss off 1 billion Chinese.”. China considers North Korea as part of their sphere of influence, and it would do our relations good if we respected that. Second, as I’m sure you all know, the US military is stretched out to it’s breaking point. Even if we did want to deliberately piss off the Chinese, we do not have the troops to do it. Finally, President Bush is seen as a warmonger throughout the world, and this really wouldn’t help his rep, and therefore: the reputation of the United States abroad.

North Korea is just like a child, and must be treated like a child. Sure a few spankings and a couple of back hands would do it good, but we must remember this fact: It is not our child, so we are not allowed to beat it. All we can do is not give more attention than it deserves.

A very good article, i must say. However, you seem to forget one factor that turns your entire argument to moot: the 63 year-old psychopathic-Korean-Dictator Kim Jong Il.

Kim has long been considered to be the most dangerous dictator in the world. And now that he has brandished his new nuclear toy, he remains number one on my scariest dictators list.

A spychotic person does not think rationaly. So the threat of North Korea just may be more pertinent than you assert. A child he may be, but unlike a child with a gun, a child with a nuke, I think may be a little more dangerous.

It is true that that little man is phycho, but I do not think that he is compleatly insane. It would take a compleatly retarded person, and a retarded staff to boot for N. Korea to luanch a nuclear missile at the US. Maybe we should not be hinging our bets on the fact that he is not retarded, but I am, and will. I continue to assert tha N. Korea is nothing more than a snot, and we should let China take care of it.

I talked to a family who adopted a girl from Korea and they all seemed to think he was a little more than your average maniac.

Okay I am getting pissed off. Politcal crossfire is turning into "we hate china" and "we hate north korea"

You are right, with nukes or without North Korea is not a threat. Would you attack a country with tens of thousands of nukes? I dont think so. I think the republicans just need to keep the hate alive.
Arms race arms race arms race....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How many times do i have to say it.\
No shots will be fired. Everyones just spouting the fear the republican broadcast to you to keep your attention away from the homefront.

I'd say that America enflamed the situation when they started to throw insults and act in an intimidating way towards N Korea. It gave them enough reason / excuse to develop defence mechanisms...

"I hate China, I hate North Korea."

I am getting pissed off. It seems like political crossfire has turned into a forum discussing the most prominant world events in international politics. Oh dear. We should talk about Canada, they don't get near enough attention.

Well, with a huge amount of international users posting on Political Crossfire, you intolerance just perpetuates the hateful and ignorant steriotypes of Americans.. This isnt discussing world politics, it is a bunch of isolated know-it-alls bashing other nations that they do not undertsand.
There are only a few users looking at situations objectively.

You can hate China all you want but hey, one day you are going to have to wake up and realize that they hate you too, they don't hate Canada, becasue we dont stick our noses into things that don't concern us. Take lessons from a nation that understands Diplomatic relations.

Canada doesnt get enough attention..well in america anyways, becasue if your people knew more about canada, our population would be 300 million and Americas would be 30 mill,

Oh and buy the way, you get a taste of canada, evey time you fill up your cars gas tank, and when half your polpulation turns on their lights, and when many of you drink some H2O

Peace
