GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- After a spirited discussion over a photo of a girl wearing a tuxedo at Thursday's Clay County School Board meeting, the principal's decision to ban the picture from the Fleming Island High School yearbook stands.
Kelli Davis, 18, had her senior class photo taken in a tuxedo top and bow-tie outfit provided for boys rather than the gown-like drape and pearls provided for girls. The school's principal decided it could not appear in the yearbook because she didn't follow the dress code.
Kelli, a straight-A student with no discipline problems, is a self-proclaimed lesbian. She said she was uncomfortable to have her chest exposed in the photo.
"Because that's me, you know. That represents me. The drape does not," Davis said. "They're not accepting me, that's the whole reason we're here."
Davis denies it's about her sexual orientation, just about a student not following the rules.
"There's a dress code to follow -- a dress code expected for senior pictures in the yearbook, and she chose not to follow them. It's just that simple," Clay School Superintendent David Owens said.
More than half of the 24 people who addressed the controversy supported using Davis' picture in the yearbook, some applauding after Cindi Davis, the teen's mother, asked the board "What is so offensive about this tiny picture?"
Cindi Davis asked the school board not only to reverse the principal's decision on the photo, but to apologize for firing the yearbook editor, who voiced her support of publishing the photo.
While the board's ruling will keep the photo from appearing with other senior pictures, it will appear in the yearbook. Kelli's parents bought a two-page ad in the back of the book for $700, which will feature the picture.

| Yeah, I didn't even read the whole article but I can't see why it's an issue. And to not put her picture in the yearbook at all is awful. She's a straight A student and her clothes have nothing to do with her sexuality, which they shouldn't really care about anyways. |

I totally agree with her.
My senior photo isn't in the yearbook b/c I refused to wear that stupid lace thing. I didn't feel comfortable in front of everyone with it on, so I just left. It wasn't due to my sexuality, but nonetheless, they shouldn't force you to wear something you don't want to wear. |

| Co sign, they are retards, get over it. Especially since in my yearbook, although the seniors were dressed up, there were plenty of dorks with Slayer and Motley Crue Tshirts on. Cuh-lassssy! |

(I'm going to assume that 'ww's response was meant to be sarcastic)
Banning the photo from the yearbook is ludicrous and unfair. |

| All I can say is, expect a whole lot more of this kind of thing to happen. Welcome to the dawn of a new age in America, where hatred and stupidity will eventually reign supreme! :1evil: |

I think you are wrong. I think we are on the verge of this crap not being acceptable anymore. It has been happening forever - people are becoming less and less tolorant of intolorance. |

I have to respectfully disagree. These types of incidents are definitely on the rise again. People who wouldn't have tried this kind of thing six or seven years ago are definitely feeling emboldened at this juncture in time. If you think this is one is bad, you ain't seen nothin' yet! There's a whole lot more to come.
Only time will tell which of us is right. |

| I know several women who used suits for thier senior pictures, and they looked great. The school board has far too much time on their hands. |

| This is just another example of bred-in opinions that are not connected with the thinkers reasoning, it was bred in to be completely true, and is therefore not scrutinized by the rational part of their brain(s). Just by saying that the dress code required women to wear dresses admits to the sexual discrimination in the dress code, that "society" has deemed it unacceptable to wear tuxedos when your a female. The way the principal answerers the objections too points out to my earlier point, he doesn't give it much thought so he could pass it off by "being simple" and go on living forever in "simplicity", i.e. an unwillingness to accept the vastly growing change and evolution of our society. |

| Forcing anyone to wear something that they would consider too revealing could definitely be considered sexual harassment. All she would have to do to get her photo in the year book would be to have a visit with the school board and her lawyer explaining that. They would probably put their tails between their legs and give up their degrading actions |
