Thursday February 24, 6:07 pm ET
PACIFIC MISSILE RANGE FACILITY, KAUAI, Hawaii, Feb. 24, 2005 /PRNewswire/ -- The Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Weapon System and Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) destroyed a ballistic missile outside the earth's atmosphere during an Aegis BMD Program flight test over the Pacific Ocean. Raytheon Company develops the SM-3. Lockheed Martin develops the Aegis BMD Weapon System.
The Feb. 24 mission -- the fifth successful intercept for SM-3 -- was the first firing of the Aegis BMD "Emergency Deployment" capability using operational versions of the SM-3 Block I missile and Aegis BMD Weapon System. This was also the first test to exercise SM-3's third stage rocket motor (TSRM) single-pulse mode. The TSRM has two pulses, which can be ignited independently, providing expansion of the ballistic missile engagement battlespace.
The SM-3 was launched from the Aegis BMD cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) and hit a target missile that had been launched from the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai, Hawaii.
"This successful flight test demonstrates the tactical, operational capability of SM-3 and the Aegis BMD Weapon System in real-world conditions," said Edward Miyashiro, Raytheon Missile Systems vice president, Naval Weapon Systems. "Successes like we've seen today provide decision makers the confidence to proceed with deploying in quantity, providing the Nation with a robust capability that will defend the U.S., deployed American forces, our friends and our allies. Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense is for real."
Japan has made decision to procure Aegis BMD with SM-3 for its Kongo class ships.
Raytheon's Missile Systems business in Tucson, Ariz., is developing SM-3 and leads the integrated team effort, which includes Alliant Techsystems, Aerojet, and The Boeing Company, which are providing major subsystems. Lockheed Martin developed the Aegis BMD Weapon System. Raytheon delivered five SM-3 operational rounds to the Missile Defense Agency in 2004. The program is transitioning to production, with Kinetic Warhead seeker and final integration occurring in Raytheon's state-of-the-art Kill Vehicle manufacturing facility, alongside the Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle. Final assembly and test will occur in Camden, Ark.
Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN - News), with 2004 sales of $20.2 billion, is an industry leader in defense and government electronics, space, information technology, technical services, and business and special mission aircraft. With headquarters in Waltham, Mass., Raytheon employs 80,000 people worldwide.
Note to Editors:
Raytheon's hit-to-kill successes with the sea-based STANDARD Missile-3 occurred on Jan. 25, June 13 and Nov. 21, 2002, and Dec. 11, 2003; and with the Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle, part of the Ground-based Missile Defense program on Oct. 2, 1999; July 13 and Dec. 3, 2001; and March 15 and Oct. 14, 2002.

No but it will keep ballistic missles away.
We already have a solution for hijacked planes and it has been proven to be able to down other planes.
We just had to tweek the programing. |

I have a solution for hijacked planes, ballastic missiles, weaponized smallpox and anthrax and suitcase nukes:
(*) Arrest these five men:
- Henry Kissinger;
- Zbigniew Brzezinsky;
- David Rockefeller;
- George Bush Senior;
- Oliver North;
(*) Tar and feather each and every one of them;
(*) Parade them down Park Avenue as the traitors to this country that they are;
(*) Put them on trial and take their depositions;
(*) Have a jury composed of American citizens decide what their Fate should hold in store for them;
You do that, and I gaurantee you're going to cut down on global terrorism by at least 98%..

Look at Psholtz' avatar.......Is that a serious look?He is more serious than you can imagine.The problem is that his viable points are lost in his paranoid dogma, thus he is almost never given the credit he deserves for some astute points.Because of his "out-there" views he is a pariah for the "tin-foil hat" crew.

No, I'm serious.. quite serious! :-D
The only problem is, now that I read my own post, I'm not sure we can really charge Kissinger and Brzezinski as being traitors to America as we're parading them down Park Avenue, since they're not even Americans to begin w/..
Of course, never mind that both these men (one from a Communist country) have held the (super) highly sensitive position of National Security Director .. I mean, that'd be like me (a native-born American) going over to France and putting myself in charge of French intelligence..
You think the French would ever allow that? probably not.. I'm amazed that the Americans did.. |

Well now they are 1 for like 10..they failed about a week ago..big deal..that test was probably set-up.
psholtz could also add Negroponte who was the pro-consul to Honduras in the 80's when the US carried out its terrorsit war against peasants and the general population by arming and supplying logistics to the murderous Contras who were formally members of the murderous National Guard in Nicaragua. Instead of suffering scorn from people he was advanced to US ambassor to the UN, then later under Dubya he was promoted Ambassor to Iraq and now National Intelligence Czar. |

Nothing personal Sholtz, but I wholeheartedly agree. |

OR add find and tar to death Osama bin laden instead of spending billions on some missile defense plan that wont do squat against a dirty bomb. Dumber than a door nail Dubya "liberates" a country, increases the military budget, slashes money for other services, and yet, the whole reason the war on terror exists is because this one master mind named OSAMA BIN LADEN orchestrated and called the shots for his minions to hijack planes and blow buildings up killing 3000 plus innocent people. Bush is a lamer. |

I read somewhere that the Russian Topol-M missles can beat this system anyway.
Does anyone know if this is true? |

| I think the system is designed to protect against one or two missiles launched by a rogue state like North Korea. It wouldn't protect against a massive ICBM attack from Russia...... |

Yes, good old Canada. Easy to talk tough about things when you have a big military right below you to protect you. Careful who you criticize, you may need to pick up the phone one day and ask for help. |

well noo............. OBL's only gripe w/ the U.S. is that we support Israel and Saudi Arabia, gripes that most thinking people in the U.S. would agree w/.. Most "terrorist" incidents that OBL has allegedly been involved w/ have occurred outside U.S. borders and even in the case of 9/11 he may or may not have had a direct (if any) role.. (<- there's a tremendous amount of conflicting evidence on this, once you can outside the Media Mind Control).
For one thing, Larry Silverstein seems to know a hell of a lot more about blowing up World Trade Towers than OBL does.. Silverstein has already admitted in public that he's the guy who blew up WTC7.. arrest Silverstein and find out what he knows about what brought down the other two towers..
Bush, on the other hand, is a known mass murderer, a known fraud, a known criminal and a known threat to the safety and security of the United States. He's also a known traitor, as he's betrayed the "trust" of every public office he's ever held. This makes him monstrously more dangerous to this country than OBL ever will be..
Again, the most dangerous terrorists threatening the United States currently are:
(*) Henry Kissinger;
(*) Zbigniew Brzezinski;
(*) David Rockefeller;
(*) George H.W. Bush;
(*) Oliver North;
and thanks to the other poster on this thread, let's throw in:
(*) John Negroponte;
(*) Porter Goss;
These people are all mass-murdering madmen.. Put them in prison, or at least make them run for their lives and hide out in some spider hole in the middle of some desert, and I guarantee global terrorism will fall by 98%.. |

North Korea is going to drop nuclear bombs onto the United States because.......................................................................... ??
The dictator of NK may be a madman, but I don't think he's a moron.. I think he understands full well what the consequences of lobbing a nuke at the U.S. would be.. Do you really think these people are that dumb?
China or Russia.... yeah, I could see them --- possibly --- having the ways and means and motive and capability to attack the United States.. but NK? Give me a break! If "NK" ever "attacks" the US, you can be (almost) assuredly that it's really the CIA that's behind the operation, false-flagging it to give us a reason to obliterate NK back into the Stone Age.. |

Like many Military projects, I'm guessing its overdue and over budget. Much like the canceled Comanche or the f22 raptor.
May i say you greatly underestimate north Korea, the fact they are linked to China is scarey. |
