I think Russia needs to find a way to engage the Islamic nations that practically surround it in a non-combative manner.

Economically, politically and culturally Russia has a vested interest in mending the bridges with these nations and their people.

After the crash of the USSR, Russia has no military worth anything, so if it comes to war, Russia's on its own.

I have no doubt, that should it be nesseccary to do so, Russia could pull itself up by its bootstraps and do more then well enough. Look how much the Soviet Union did against the Germans, despite Stalin's Bloody Purges. The US didn't have much of an Army during the Revolution, it still came out on top. And Germany had, arguably, the best Army in the World... look where it ended up.

Correct, that doesn't mean that the Russian Military won't pull itself together when it needs too. It has done so plenty of times before. Peter the Great's Russia, an army of something like 50,000 men was defeated in the Baltic by an attacking Swedish Force that was something like 2,000 men. Without ending the war, Peter the Great later acheived victory in that war, the great Northern War, in the battle of Poltava, and after that was considered one of the most formidable military forces in Europe, with Russian soldiers even being hired by Germany to help fight in their wars. Only a few years previous the Russian military had been considered the most backward in Europe.
